After four days of teases and speculation, Obsidian Entertainment has unveiled Project Eternity as its newest RPG in development. It is looking for $1.1 million on Kickstarter for a game that pays homage to the old Infinity Engine games we loved from the days of Black Isle Studios.

The Kickstarter page for the game (which is using Project Eternity as a working title) says the dev team hopes to "recapture the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of classic RPGs that we enjoyed making -- and playing." Obsidian boasts many of the same Black Isle members that created such games as Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate, including Feargus Urquhart Josh Sawyer, and Chris Avellone. They also have Tim Cain, who worked on Fallout, Arcanum and Temple of Elemental Evil.

For more details check out the video below. The game has already collected more than $85,000 in the short time it has been live.

The way it's going right now, it's possible. I think they are still in the stage where the word is spreading so it will probably keep accelerating for the rest of today until it slows down in a couple days. Impressive.

As much as I love the idea, I dunno how I feel anymore about giving my money to a game that will be in production for 2+ years

You must pirate a lot of games then?

Uh, what? I pirate 0 games. What I am saying is that I'm not a fan of the idea of giving my money to a game and not see a return for two years, not matter how small the amount. I rather wait until I see an alpha, beta, something real, some previews, gameplay, etc...

Which has nothing to do with your comment accusing him of being a pirate because he doesn't want to throw money down a 2-year long tunnel.

HIs statement was vague and open to interpretation, I was taking an extreme position. You're free to white knight for your kickstarter embargo buddy though.

Calm down dude, I'm just saying personally I don't think it's worth it to contribute to an idea of a game that will be released in two years, I rather see progress and gameplay. Personal preference... no need to get anal about pirating games, which makes no sense whatsoever in this case. I'm not saying you shouldn't or taking shit about the game or backers.

I feel the same way, but I think I'm going to break the mold here. $20 can get you the game and losing $20 if it fails horribly isn't much of a big deal for me. Besides, this is obsidian, while buggy, I have liked all their games, even back when many of them were at black isle.

They've put out many good games over the years with lots of great memories and fun. $20 to make one more (buggy) game isn't going to break my bank.

He says he doesn't want to pre-fund games on a promise that doesn't mature for years, you accuse him of...pirating? What?
Does he owe the dev for entertaining the idea of playing that game?

        100% agreed.
I'm glad that Kickstarter is allowing games to make it which would otherwise flounder without funding, many of them games I want to play, but I'm not really down with buying something years before I get it. That is just insane.

The ones that look awesome I'll buy when they're actually available. Grim Dawn, that TA in Space game, some other one I remember seeing...roguelike Zelda maybe?

Pledged. Thank god for kickstarter allowing devs to go back to making the games I want to actually play. Project Eternity, FTL, Shadowrun returns, Wasteland 2, Banner Saga... even if only a few of these turn out well, I'll be happy.

Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

        Sounds really really ambitious.

I'm new to Kickstart. Are these projects asking for free money, or investments which will be paid back, if the projects are successful?

      • reply
        September 14, 2012 11:17 PM

It's a donation system. There are rewards offered as incentives to donate, but there are no safeguards in place to guarantee anything. If a project fails, the money has probably been spent so there's nothing to pay back.

      • reply
        September 14, 2012 11:24 PM

Basically the company asks for donations and gives you rewards based on what you donate. Usually the finished version of the game is part of the reward, unless the donation is very small.

If they don't meet their goal, you don't lose the money you offered to donate. If they meet their goal, you are charged the money you offered, and (hopefully) when the game is finished, you get the rewards promised for how much you donated.

There is some risk still, though. They may never actually make the game despite meeting their kickstarter goal. With a big company like Obsidian, I'm sure they'll follow through with their promises.

also, I'm drunk so forgive me for any mistakes in this post.
