Wii U needs connected Wii to transfer purchased games

A Nintendo representative has confirmed that you'll need to keep your Wii around to transfer data from it to the Wii U.

After hearing the Wii U details and eyeing some trade-ins, you might be tempted to head down to your local games retailer and give them your Wii. We'd advise you to wait, at least if you want to keep all of your old data and purchased Virtual Console games.

A Nintendo representative confirmed to Gimmie Gimmie Games that a content transfer from the Wii to Wii U will require you to have both systems connected to the Internet at once. The rep compared the process to transferring between the DS/3DS family of systems.

That transfer will include all of your Miis, WiiWare, and Virtual Console games. You probably don't want to have to repurchase those games, so best to keep your old neglected Wii around for a while longer.

Ohhhh? Is this the first confirmation we've received that Virtual Console games will be transferable?

It was already announced shortly after E3, but we had yet to see how they would procede.

You also need an SD card in the wii u to transfer the games over. The vc and wiiware games will play in wii mode so will not be able to be displayed on the wiipad. So its about as bare bones as you can get for supporting those games but it's better than nothing.

Hopefully there will be some kind of scaling. Playing NES games via VC on an HDTV is a blurry nightmare.

No it isn't, it's sharp as fuck, what are you doing wrong? Unless you mean you can count the individual pixels as being "blurry".

doubt it. those purchases are actually tied to your account, not your console. so transferring them will be a snap in comparison.

I was really hoping they would come out with accounts for 3ds and wii u. This is so backwards.
