Obsidian hints at a Dungeon Siege sequel

It's not much to go on, but Obsidian Entertainment is teasing a new RPG on their company web site. Seen in the cryptic tease is the number 4 and some obscure text about the Dirge of Eir Glanfath. Seeing as Obsidian worked on Dungeon Siege 3 for Square Enix, it isn't much of a stretch that the 4 could mean the next installment to the fantasy RPG series.

The site offers the following: "What do the words mean? Nothing. The Dirge of Eír Glanfath is sound without form, a lone voice crying out in mourning because it must."

A quick glance at the source of the webpage offers this additional snippet: "To tenderness, fellowship. To fellowship, vigilance. So bring we all to the Night Market. I am the Spindle of Esenath. Know me by my light and stand with me in darkness."

Obsidian is currently finishing up South Park: The Stick of Truth and is offering assistance on Wasteland 2 with inXile Entertainment.

Oh man! I know it's hip to hate on Dungeon Siege, but I still love all three games. Totally underrated.

I've had 3 for awhile, but I've had trouble getting into it. I want to like it, but it hasn't grabbed me any of the times I've tried it.

I bought the third one in the steam summer sale because I loved the first two ... and still can't play it because the m+kb controls are so god fucking awful =\

I had hoped that there was at the very least some kind of third party hack at this point to make it bearable but apparently not.

I definitely played with a 360 controller. It's a huge departure from the previous games, but I liked it a lot.

I enjoyed 3 enough to play it through quite a few times, that might be because 1 and 2 were longer though.

        1 and 2 were alright.

3 was abysmal. Almost everything Obsidian has done has been abysmal. I don't want to hate Obsidian. I really want them to succeed. They write great stories. They just fail horribly at gameplay or even at something as base as bug detection and correction.

Good. Get busy on that already. I loved part 3. Could use a little work, but its NOTHING that a sequel cant fix.
Let me know when to drop a pre-order.

One of the Global Moderators in the forum said "Zero chance." Plus, it seems odd to announce it in this way.

Yeah definitely! It's clearly not going to be Fallout 4. It's probably not the Wheel of Time project they were supposedly working on (even if there is an Ouroboros) because the other dev on that is making a Kickstarter.

The number 4 (if it's not a countdown) does seem to suggest Dungeon Siege 4; plus this news from a while ago http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/05/rumour-square-enix-publishing-project-x-with-external-studio/ would corroborate that idea but that also seems too obvious. Even if it's not DS4 Square Enix is probably the publisher due to the way that the project is codenamed.

It's obviously Baldur's Gate 4. They're pulling a Leisure Suit Larry and skipping a number in the series.

            With one stipulation:

Obsidian would be forced to out-source all QA.

With the exception of Troika, Obsidian makes some of the buggiest damn games to hit retail shelves.

Outsourcing the QA is what made all their games so buggy in the first place.

Dungeon Siege III was very bugless, but it also seemingly had the smallest scope of any Obsidian game to date.

Obsidian is contracted to make a game. Then often forced to release the game before it is ready. They really do make good games with alot of potential. It would be nice to see them make their own or game.

              See
              KoTOR 2
              NWN2
              Fallout NV

Also, if ANY company was gonna make BG3/4, would I balls want it to be Obsidian. Not with their track record.

I was hoping that all of their hints of doing a kickstarter would lead them to announcing something riskier than another Dungeon Siege sequel. Not that I blame them for doing this after all of the financial problem they've had and it sounds like people liked the third game anyway.

It's nothing like the first two games. It's an Action RPG designed for dual analogs. I really enjoyed it (plenty of lore tie-ins to the first game) and the action is pretty good IMO.

I enjoyed it, but it is seriously lacking in content and player customization.

I mean...it's a game I'd play through once, like Diablo III.

The story is better than DIII, though.

They need to just take Dungeon Siege 1, sign a pact in blood to not change any of its base elements, like controls, leveling, never ending world with no load screens, co-op multiplayer with persistent characters, and swear to keep all that in the game. Make the graphics better and make different enemies. I would be happy with that.

Me and my friends still all install our copies of Dungeon Siege (on TWO CDS!!) every once in a while for a run through Aranna. I love that game.

Second one ehhhhh, not as good. 3rd one, never played cause it didn't seem like dungeon siege at all except that you can click on stuff.

It's not Dungeon Siege 4. Chris Avellone said on his blog on the website that it's a countdown timer and they'd announce something in four days. DS3 did not sell well, so it's not DS4.

It's a logo with a numeral inside of it; the number can be easily replaced with 3, 2, 1. As we'll see tomorrow.

"Still, it’s nice to be home and back into the thick of things here. Speaking of which, for those of you who’ve come to visit the page, you may have noticed our countdown. Our countdown to what? It should become clear in 4 days or so – stay vigilant."

Interesting. They must have deliberately started at four to push DS4 speculation. Of course it could also be a countdown timer to ... DS4.

Small tidbits that it could also be:

            Eir is Nordic for valkyrie
            Glanfath could mean Grandfather
Several of the words sound like they have a Scottish origin. Feargus Urquhart from Obsidian is Scottish (he named Black Isle)
