Sony Loves Emulators

Ok, not really. But big news for all you emulator lovers. It looks like Sony has backed out of their lawsuit against Connectix, makers of a Playstation emulator that was being sold for PCs. This is a pretty darn big deal which could carry over implications to other emulator legal battles.

"While we recognize that Sony may still attempt to bring some of these claims back before the court at a later date, this represents the third victory in a row for Connectix in this case," Connectix chief executive Roy McDonald said in a statement.
On the subject of consoles, ArsTechnica linked to this bit with word that the Dreamcast GD-ROMs have been cracked.

  • It seems to me that no emulator can truly cut much into the profits of a console gaming company, because the hardware doing the emulating (the computer) has to be so much more advanced than the console itself that most of said console's sales will be said and done before the emulator even comes out. The PSX had been out for three years or so before anyone managed to emulate it; how much of the PSX's sales could reasonably be expected to happen after it's been on the shelves three years? I would bet that the only reason anyone buys a psx anymore is because their old one is broken...

And it's not like this trend is going to stop...can even a brand spankin new TBird 1000 oclocked to 1100 with all the fixins emulate a ps2? Probably not. The console market is geared towards the sale of games anyway; they sell you the console for as cheap as possible so that every Christmas and birthday you get a $50 game. Connectix and Bleem will only help Sony sell more old psx games to people that haven't bought a ps2.

Hell, man, Sony should develop their OWN psx emulator. They know all the trade secrets that the others have to reverse engineer, so they could make a FLAWLESS psx emulator. They make it as hard to pirate as bleem is (if you've never tried to pirate bleem, um, don't), they sell em for $40 a pop, and bam, they got MONEY.
