Penny Arcade Expo attendees were treated to the very first footage of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Running on a PC with specs comparable to current-gen consoles, Ground Zero is the first game to show off Kojima Productions' new Fox Engine--and boy, is it a beaut.

Watch this ten-minute debut trailer to see Fox Engine show off its shaders, and impressive lighting and particle effects. The game is currently announced for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Ground Zeroes promises to be an open-world game, one that will let you deploy a flare at any time to call in a helicopter--one that will let you fly between missions and even other countries. There are many vehicles that can be commandeered as well--all part of Kojima's plan to create a "game without game over."

Oddly, Ground Zeroes is not Metal Gear Solid 5, according to a transcript by the PlayStation.Blog. Instead, it's a "prologue" to whatever MGS5 will end up being. However, given the significant advancement in tech Ground Zeroes represents, we're certain it'll be as important as any numbered entry in the franchise.

How so? I think battlefield 3 looks way better. Keep in mind most of that was a scripted sequence. The scripted parts of mgs4 looked incredible. As did the rest of the game.

Scripted Sequence. I don't think you realize what this demo was about. It wasn't about Metal Gear itself. It was about demoing the Fox engine, in real-time, what it can do, in-game. From the comments in this section most Shackers seem quite clueless about this demo. It wasn't demo'd on consoles. It was demo'd on a PC and personally I could see someone saying BF3 looks as good, or simply has a different style, a different look, and really can't be 1:1 compared but to say it looks way better... 1:19 that trumps character models in BF3 easily

Did you even watch this in 1080p? I mean, shit, you do realize that even in 1080p on youtube the bitrate is so low that it can't represent what the game really looks like. You need to go compare BF3 youtube vids to this video. That's the only accuracy to be had in this situation.

3:40 I've never seen facial animations on par with that in a game. The skin tone, the nuance of expression, it's realistic. Most games, cutscenes, overdo things. They overemphasize and exaggerate to look 'real'. That solider was near expressionless, but he expression he had was still present, easily recognizable. It's the best I've ever seen in gaming.

I don't think that's due to power. That's just good modeling and animation.

The accuracy of a animation is directly related to the tech it's using. Skin tone, poly count, lighting, if any one of those isn't 'right' a face won't look natural, wont' look 'real', like that face did.

From MoH airborne to Mass Effect to L.A. Noire developers have been bragging about how they've created tools in their engine offering facial animations which raised the bar. I find it hard to believe that all of their pandering is actually 'just modeling and textures'. No, you need tools, in the engine, to allow for those animations to take place. The tools to create them are coded, in the engine, by programmers.

Spending polys in an engine means that the engine has to be optimized enough to support that expenditure. The same is true about animations, and modeling, and textures. Without the foundation of optimization in engines you can't afford to have any of those things in the quantities seen in this demo. That's how game engines work.

100% agree there is no way it will look like that on the old consoles, they be idiots not to release it on the PC. Basically if you want it to look like that = PC version.

This game could be my ideal Metal Gear game. All of the toys from MGS4 put into a big sandbox to play in. Excellent.

You're playing as Big Boss. The game looks to be between Peace Walker and NES Metal Gear. Raiden looks to be in there as well (that child soldier).

Whatever platform its on, I'm buying (if I don't have it already).

remember that PC needs like 4x the power of a console to do the same graphics because of driver/os overhead

so they probably meant a PC with specs that could do 360/ps3 graphics
