Gotham City Impostors goes free-to-play on PC

Gotham City Impostors seemed set up to be free-to-play from the start, selling XP boosters, costumes, instant unlocks, and the like, yet it still had a $15 price tag. No longer, at least on PC. While the console editions curiously are still paid, Monolith's Bat-tastic FPS is free-to-play on PC through Steam from today.

Head on over to Steam to download it. While you're there, you can pick up some of those little microtransaction doodads for cheap, as Warner Bros is knocking 20% it all until September 7.

Our Steve was pretty pleased with Gotham City Impostors when he played, so give it a go.

Here's a delightfully cheesy new trailer to celebrate the launch:

Possibly worth noting that if GFWL is what scared anyone off the first time around, this version is GFWL free and uses Steamworks instead.

I feel guilty sounding negative on this, but I really don't have an interest in "Batman meets TF2", even if it's free to play. I burned out on TF2 back in 2008, and I've never had any passion for the Batman fiction.

I'm hoping that Monolith's next project is something other than a WB / DC Comics IP trap. WB went off the rails with FEAR 2 going whole-hog console shooter with quick-time events, and then seemed to have Monolith follow the lead of Batman Arkham Asylum. The biggest strength of WB owning Monolith has been subverted into Monolith's biggest liability: getting trapped to do IP-owned games, not being able to produce something truly creative or great on its own.
