Weekend Confirmed 128 - Guild Wars 2, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, Walking Dead

In this week's game-packed episode of Weekend Confirmed, Garnett Lee, Jeff Cannata, and Jeff Mattas are joined by regular guest Christian Spicer, and special guest Phillipe Bosher of Buried in the Credits. The crew discusses whether or not Guild Wars 2 brings a breath of fresh air to the MMO space, and a host of other games get some love as well. Forza Horizon, The Walking Dead, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and Thirty Flights of Loving are just some of the games on tap for critical dissection. And of course, things get wrapped up with a healthy dose of Finishing Moves.

  • I don't know why this is but every time I hear you discuss MMOs I want to punch something.

    Perhaps it's because you frequently get the mechanics of the games you're talking about just... wrong.

    Mostly, I think it's because you maybe shouldn't be playing MMOs cause you don't seem to enjoy them.

    Here's the reason MMOs don't explain every single detail of the game to you, they don't have to. Part of playing the game is learning how to play from the other players. If you're not learning from reading chat and asking questions and, yes, reading the wiki or even the manual then you're doing it wrong. You're cutting out a major portion of the game which is the other people running around you.

    It's an MMO. It IS a social game. And if you think reading the wiki isn't social, who do you think wrote that wiki?

    Not taking advantage of those other players is like... playing a console game with only one side of the controller. If we're going to make ridiculous analogies.

    Oh and if you're worried that the game may be too daunting for the common mortal think of this, there's no manual or on screen instruction for the iPhone either but Apple seems to do fairly well selling and supporting those.

    We live in the age of "figure it out or ask". Maybe that'll just have to be a problem for you.

    • Can't you see how wrong headed that opinon is? It will only lead to people that only understand half of what they are doing. Which in turn will lead to bad experiences later on, in an MMO, when grouping will become a necessity and not just a social nicety.

      It's also silly because the solution is so easy. If you are launching an MMO you will have an army of community managers. You assign each one an aspect of the interface and they make an instructional video. It doesn't need to be super deep or anything. Just enough to introduce you to all the aspects of the mechanic or experience you are introducing. Then you just put a question mark icon on every thing in the game so when you aren't sure what you are supposed to doing, you click the button and instant help.

      It doesn't need to be strategy or indepth analysis, just enough to get me started. you don't need to teach me how to corner the auction house, you just need to, first explain to me what it is, then walk me through the interface. You don't need to populate my character points for me just walk me through the interface and tell me what I CAN do, and then probably an explanaiton of what people will be EXPECTING me to do. Those are the two biggest things that lead to problems later on.

      I don't how many stories I've heard of people that I personally introduced to WoW who got through half the level cap before they learned they needed to use skill points in their character tree. I mean look at WoW. They had to start auto populating skills into the action bar because people werent figuring out, not how to do it, but even that it was something they could do. They did it again most recently with removing the character point system entirely. there was so much player on player judgement about spec that it was always a single spec that dominated the class combinations. you never experimented yourself, you just went to your favored website and find the person who's figured out the best spec in the beta. it was a waste of your own time to do it any other way because the player environment would essentially abjure you if your spec wasn't "optimal". Their solution was to just remove the spec entirely and let you instead pick bonuses to things that "don't matter" like player movement, or some specialized ability to suit particular play styles. I mean they took the math out of it basically. I don't know that its better. I'm kind of done with WoW anyway. well this got long didn't it.....
