Techland, the studio behind Dead Island, has announced a new game called Project Hell. The title is only a code name, but the game is described as a dark fantasy hack-and-slash. The team is inviting feedback as it shares insights on the development process.

The Project Hell blog says the game idea started as a weapon mod for Dead Island that allowed players to slice up monsters with aplomb. It asks for "help in making some decisions," but jokes that "we won't be asking for your money on Kickstarter."

So far the blog has posted a few pieces of concept art, and says the dark horror setting was chosen as the team remembers games like Quake and Diablo. "While searching for a dark and mature mood we are constantly referring to early European medieval times," one entry states. "It was a time when a lot of people were torn between Christianity and pagan habits – they attended masses but kept casting curses, asking oracles for advice all the while living in fear of necromancy. This gives us a believable base to build up a setting with grounds for magic bound with the evil side."

I'd love to learn more about the project. I wonder if the devs drew any inspiration from Dark Souls, which sets the bar as THE dark fantasy hack-and-slash these days.

Why am I always surprised when I hear that people enjoyed Dead Island?

Welp, I hope they produce something playable :3

? What was wrong with Dead Island? It was a great co-op experience with friends and wasn't bad in single player...

I loved the hell out of that game! It's very rare I play a game to completion - Dead Island was one of the lucky ones :)

Metacritic would disagree with you. Dead island for all it's faults was an overall fantastic experience. The environments were very fun to explore around in, tons of goodies to find, lots of weapons to use.

I mean what's not to love about breaking a zombie's arm, then slicing off another, then pushing him off a freaken cliff onto a flaming car?

It was the best first-person melee game since Dark Messiah so shut yo trap and go back to your favorite game which I probably hate.

because it was fun? I mean it had a LOT of flaws, but overall it was an enjoyable game to play.

Dead Island act 1 was awesome. It's a shame the rest of the game couldn't live up to the first area.

really the only areas that pissed me off were the sewers and the final area. but the jungle, city and beach areas were great

It also became a bit too linear for my taste.

        SERIOUS QUESTION

People who played this, why the hell didn't you like it? I honestly have no idea how you don't like like a zombie-killing GTA with ARPG progresstion and random loot. It was honestly a sleeper hit for me (somehow missed all that pre-release trailer hype) and I thought it did what I set out to do completely.

You certainly took different things from the game than I did. I wasn't expecting much from the game and it ended up being really fun for me. There were many places to explore and discover and it was great to do it all co-op as well, which I felt was the games biggest strength. Perhaps because my expectations were very low I ended up surprised at how enjoyable it was. The leveling system gave me some goals to go stomp some heads rather than run away from everything, and it's always fun to explore for useful loot. Also, Rage was the regret game of the decade, not Dead Island.

As someone who has beaten this game 3 times on 360 I just want to point out that there were never any randomly generated shovels. It, like the hat stand, was always had the same old stats.

I guess it's just about expectations? I didn't really expect much out of the game itself. I still think the story is kinda lame.
