Watch an hour of XCOM: Enemy Unknown

You wouldn't know it from watching the bang-pow-quote-cinematic-die-die trailers, but XCOM: Enemy Unknown is actually a turn-based tactical affair in the same vein as the widely-celebrated original X-COM games. Fortunately, publisher 2K decided to show off the game itself yesterday, though you'll have missed it if you don't follow social Twitfacestreams. So come, enjoy over an hour of tactical delights.

Lead designer Jake Solomon and lead programmer Casey O'Toole from developer Firaxis, of Civilization fame, got together with community manager Greg Laabs yesterday to play and stream 56 minutes of Enemy Unknown, showing off two single-player campaign levels.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 9.

Skip through. There aren't any story spoilers but there's a lot of gameplay and you see 4 or 5 enemy types. It looks amazing.

Very nice! But the guy going "That's X-com" every fucking time something happens becomes very old very fast.

That is nice, but he comes across as someone who tries too hard to say that this is a worthy successor to x-com. Which may be true.

That's what the rabid X-Com fans want to hear, though. And it wasn't every time something happened, it was every time an X-Com-ism occurred. Actually, I was saying it right along with him, though mine was sorta pleasantly surprised in tone!
It's like having to complete a mission, then coming back and getting your reward, then killing the guy who gave you the mission. "That's Fallout."

I must say...It. Looks. MAHVELOUS. And I wasn't ever a fanboy. I liked X-Com, but... It was no Eternal Dagger, or Breach, but it was cool. But THIS ONE...It *is* a Breach or Eternal Dagger...
