Rockstar continues with the Grand Theft Auto 5 media deluge, dumping four more action shots on us featuring everything from a helicopter-car chase to a biplane flying through a canyon. I'm particularly intrigued by the night shot of a soon-to-be-dead bad guy taking pot shots at a police chopper. The new images bring the total screens released this week to 10. Rockstar previously dropped some leisure and transportation shots on us.The good news is Rockstar has promised us more in a few weeks. Take a look through them and tell us your favorite. I'm kinda partial to the image below.

Sure hope this is a PC image

Leslie Benzies once said, "Until we've simulated the world outside, we're not going to stop." I always get excited for new GTA games when I think of this quote.

Because it means there will be a PC release at the same time as the consoles. Which would be win.

Are they showing the game off at Pax this year?

The engine they used for Max Payne 3 ran pretty good on PC. I think the PC GTA5 probably won't suffer the same problems GTA4 did.

A game like Max Payne is usually in small areas though. The main problem with GTA4 performance, for me anyway, was the sluggishness when driving around at faster speeds... even on an SSD. Hopefully they've sorted that out by now.

I realize this. Basically what I am getting at is they have made a concerted effort to do the PC version right.

Okay, I'm an idiot.. the sluggishness had nothing to do with loading stuff in, it was the shadow quality setting. The game has trouble drawing all the shadows fast enough when driving around. I just had to turn it down low. Less pretty but playable now.

You'd think that programmers would *enjoy* putting PC versions out now, since they can do so much more and not necessarily have to worry about performance as much. But maybe I'm just looking at it all wrong.

"Sure hope this is a PC image"

1280x720 resolution screenshot. So no. Also, Rockstar does publicity with their console versions. I take it the connotation was that you don't think consoles will give a satisfyingly smooth performance with those visuals? For PC, they'd be just ok, so I hope the PC version will yet give even more.

I really wasn't sure. For a second I thought that you might have been implying that there were random helicopter/car chases or something.

sorry but the water looks pretty standard. The big challenge with realtime water rendering is doing actual geometry displacement (such as waves and silhouettes of edges). The current standard (and screenshot) is usually no more than composition of a set of multiple normal and relfectance maps that are parametrically/procedurally animated at different rates.

Some more realistic water is like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAsoXHHCqWM

However, since GTA is not a fluid simulator and actually needs to calculate the rest of the game, this water will do nicely.
