Sony closing Wipeout dev SCE Studio Liverpool
by Alice O'Connor, Aug 22, 2012 6:15am PDTSony Computer Entertainment today confirmed plans to shut down Studio Liverpool, 19 years after acquiring it and almost 30 after the studio was founded as the hallowed Psygnosis. Studio Liverpool was most known for creating and developing racing series Wipeout, but it was also once a publisher too, bringing the world DMA Design's (now Rockstar) Lemmings games.
"It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed. Liverpool Studio has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and have contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years," Sony said in an official statement provided to GamesIndustry International. "Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements."
It added, "However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers."
The best of luck to everyone affected by this. Fingers crossed for the future of Wipeout, too.
