Diablo 3 to add 100 'Paragon' levels in patch 1.04

Blizzard has outlined the new Paragon system coming in Diablo 3's version 1.0.4 patch, which is targeted at giving better late-game progression and fixing frustrations with the Magic Find gear.

Blizzard has unveiled a new "Paragon" system coming in patch 1.04 of Diablo 3, aimed at adjusting the Magic Find system and end-game content. The Magic Find tweaks are engineered to deal with feedback that some users find swapping gear frustrating or unfair, and Blizzard has already been pretty frank about its end-game.

A blog post from game director Jay Wilson details the new system. Once you hit level 60, your experience from killing monsters will go towards Paragon levels. The game has 100 Paragon levels in all, which reward you with extra Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Vitality, along with 3% Magic Find and 3% Gold Find. You'll also get an increasing border around your character portrait to show off your Paragon status. Blizzard says that the time investment to get to the upper Paragon levels is roughly the same as the time required to get to level 99 in Diablo 2.

It will also cap Magic Find and Gold Find to 300% (sans Nephalem Valor), so if you reach Paragon you can keep wearing your Magic Find gear while grinding for higher levels, but won't have to use that special gear once you hit level 100.

Blizzard hasn't outlined a date for the upcoming patch yet, but promises more details soon.

This is a really convoluted way to solve MF gear swapping..

it solves more than MF gear, it also gives people shit to do...extends the life of end game which is another huge problem they have.

No no no. It doesn't extend the life of end game. It merely pushes the end game back 100 levels. People will bring out their torches and pitchforks again once they cap out Paragon levels.

Assuming they're not exaggerating when they say it's as much work as reaching lvl99 in D2, that's going to take a good while... I think Blizzard is doing the exact right thing here.

Only if by convoluted, you mean "awesome." 1.04 is shaping up to be a huge face-saving patch for the D3 team. I uninstalled weeks ago, but I'm tempted to try it.

Indeed. This and the re-worked Legendaries seems like enough of a reason for another romp or two.

I think Diablo 3 needs a lot more than a second levelling system to make it enjoyable again. Seems like a lazy way to get people to keep playing and sink even more money into RMAH. I would be far more excited if they were introducing new enemies/skills/etc, at least some kind of content.

They have been incredibly clear that D3 isn't about free content like WoW was. You aren't paying monthly for this.

Gamers : The big problem D3 has is your progression stops at level 60. In D2, the level cap was 99, so you were always gaining experience and making your character better while farming.

Blizzard : Okay, we'll add a 100-level level system that will give you level-up bonuses so you're continuously improving your characters.

Gamers : FUCKING LAZY AND GREEDY BLIZZARD DOING STUPID SHIT TO MAKE US SPEND MORE MONEY ON THE RMAH.

LoD was an addition of a 5th act... i think they delivered more than enough content for a $60 no monthly fee game. if you aren't satisfied, stop playing and move on to another game.

If they aren't going to go live with 1.04 this week, I guess I don't have to grind my Wizard to 60. I dropped all my MF Gear for Exp Gear.

This is cool and all, but it it really a fix for MF gear? In theory it should take a long, long, long time to get Paragon levels, and MF works the same that whole time.

It's not a complete fix, but I don't think it will take hardcore players that long to get to paragon 50+ at which point the benefit of swapping becomes increasingly negligible. At that point you can fairly easily just get the remaining MF on your gear and not need to swap.

it's not like act 1 is going to stop giving xp once they hit a certain plvl. farmers can keep doing what they're doing until they hit a point in plvl to settle on a mix of regular gear and mf gear etc etc.

indeed. people consumed the shipped product at a blistering pace, so this is good. there needs to be something to do until the expansion(s).

and not the exact same, since the class tweaks are pretty intense. the inferno builds everyone settled on won't necessarily be the only way to go anymore, AND, they are finally encouraging coop play. so, that's a huge change from their observed metrics that by far and away people just play this alone.

unless this next patch adds offline single player then people like me could care less,
i dont have a reliable way to get high speed internet where i live, so online only games
are a auto no go for me, i have been a diablo fan since back in the day and when
i heard about D3 i was so excited, then they made it online only and well no more
diablo for me, i get that someone in marketing or advertising said this whole online
only with DLC is going to be the next wave in the cashola machine but i hate to tell
them, they missed that boat, ISPs are now going to bandwidth limiting across
the board, with netflix and downloadable games, online only games, patches,
etc etc we will see those limits hit almost every month, some will have to pay
overages while others will see huge cuts in speed and not be able to do the
things they want to do, game devs are simply ignoring this huge elephant
that will ruin online only games.

truth is this would all have worked much better
in the days where unlimited bandwidth was not only common but expected, however
as always they seem to be two steps behind, think ahead for once, see whats coming
and plan properly, i honestly believe the truth is that if game devs and studios had
embraced the online thing back when the pirates started to and offered fair
prices they would have come out on top with pirates only getting a tiny % of
the total games distributed, but instead they were extremely slow to adopt
online distribution. the saddest fact is this, their customers are far quicker to
innovate than they are and they suffer because of this, i do my best to support
the game devs that i felt got it right or tried their best to. im so sick of their idea
of innovation being "how can we squeeze every penny possible out of our customers"
instead of, "how can we do better for our customers"

i get that they want to protect their content but to force online connectivity was a bad
idea, i for one still will not own a single game that requires it, and i never will,
i would quit playing all together before being forced to do something i either
dont want to or would have to pay even more money for, the world of video games
sure has changed, and honestly im very sad about where its heading. now dont
get me wrong, i dont mean MMORPGs here as i was a huge fan of those when i
could play them, but those are much different in my eyes, not every game needs to
      be mmo.
