Shack PSA: Final Fantasy VII now on PC

Final Fantasy VII is now available on the PC through Square's site, for $9.99.

Final Fantasy VII has finally hit the PC, after a brief false start a week ago. The company has released a launch trailer to mark the event, and it can be purchased on Square Enix's online store for $9.99.

The list price is $11.99, so it seems the company is holding a launch sale. Despite an earlier leak, the game isn't available on Steam, so you'll have to go the Square route if you want the game sooner than later. As previously reported, this version of the game includes achievements, cloud saves, and a character booster to cheat your way through tough spots. Check out the trailer below.

yeah wondered about that aswell, buy the game and just play it, sure if you pirate it you'll just whine about it -.- DRM isnt that big of a issue imo but for some it is but it shouldnt be THAT big of a deal for nostalgic game like this

If I pirate this game I can almost guarantee I'll have a better experience with the DRM than you will.

Usability aside, why the fuck should I be required to connect to the internet to play a Playstation 1 game? I completely understand D3's implementation, since that is a multiplayer game. This makes no sense and is retarded.

make that a bet, pirate it and play it in one go without saving ^^ seriously tho, for cloud saves the need of drm is a bit too much, still that cant be fixed at this point so we will have to live with that.

when there is no need related to game play --- YES

I spent 4 days in the hospital & could not log into steam, thus no steam games for me.
In the day to day, always online is not bad (assuming it does not cause you to hit bandwidth caps) but there are times when you really want to play a game, but cannot because of a requierment that is not gameplay based.

Why could I not play Civ 5, Political Machiene, Endless Space, or other great time waisters simply becaue in our rush to get to the hospital I did not load up steam and put it in "offline mode" before I left the house?

for now it seems the only good thing about this re-release is the support for shared saves (which would be good with a quick connection to net and make them shared then but the need for internet connection all the time ruins that a bit) otherwise the achievements are just bull, the booster ruins them later if they patch some more later (and generally makes things too easy) and the remastered music just aint been that good yet, we'll see that later how it goes

Back when they ported FF7 to the PC (~1998) it wasn't common for PC's to be powerful enough to run both the game and be able to play MP3-based music as well (on top of the operating system) so the PC port used MIDI music which was the style of the time. If you think back most games either used MIDI (like DOOM) or used redbook audio-based music off of the disc (like Quake).

It looks like Square Enix dusted off the PC port that used MIDI and made it run on Windows 7, use achievements, etc.

For music purposes the PSX version's a better deal at the moment.

For that port they didn't even rerender the backgrounds. PC's even then had higher res than an SDTV. The background were pixielated even in 98. Now that monitor resolutions are like 2-4x higher than back then, it's just even uglier now than that old port.

            ***Now with more DRM!***

This makes it sound like it was never released on PC before. My original playthrough of this game was on PC (with a Gravis gamepad even!) since I didn't own a Playstation at the time. And apparently that copy is going up in value... http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Pc/dp/B00000DMAA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1345045054&sr=8-2&keywords=final+fantasy+VII+pc

I hope they fixed the speed of the motorcycle attack sequence and chocobo racing because before it wasn't speed adjusted so it ran through those bits FAST on modern computers.

It adds achievements (but Kotaku points out , they are relatively tame and bland, the usual for completing chapters, maxing out stats, etc.) ; you can also max out characters upfront (I think via micro-transactions) if you hate the grind.

I got it on psn last year and tried to replay it (last time was on it's release). I ended up stopping pretty early on, just couldn't get into it at all anymore. Wasn't the graphics or anything, just so slow moving.

Very poor release for $9.99 and because of the DRM it can't be modded.

The modders have create a far better experience for the original PC release:

Apparently this release breaks compatibility with a lot of the mods, too. Especially anything that requires a change in the .exe, probably due to the DRM or something. So, at least for now, the best way to play this game is to either get the PSX version (for purists) or get the old retail PC discs and mod the game to hell and back with stuff from the qhimm.com.
