After spending years on the LittleBigPlanet franchise, Media Molecule has revealed their next brand new IP: Tearaway, a paper world where you can help the hero Iota just by touching the back of your Vita.

After spending years on the LittleBigPlanet franchise, Media Molecule has revealed their next brand new IP: Tearaway, a paper world where you can help the hero Iota just by touching the back of your Vita.

Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evan announced the title at Sony's press conference at Gamescom. Using the Vita's touch capabilities, a player can tap the backside of the Vita to get Iota to jump, or maintain contact to push fingers into the game world to destroy enemies. To be honest, it sounds a lot like Little Deviants, a Vita launch game.

"We wondered 'Where do we take creative gaming next?' The Vita is an amazing tactile device," Evans said, and Tearaway uses those capabilities in a new way.

The debut trailer shows some pretty interesting player interaction with the game.

        Media Molecule shows their colorblindness! That is, they don't realize that they're ignoring the vast majority of people in the world. Yay for institutionalized racism. *sigh*

        I hope they've taken this into account in the actual game. Those fingers may simply have detailed textures that can be swapped out. It shouldn't be hard to detect a player's overall skin tone and adjust the textures to suit. They may be able to just apply a color filter over a single base texture to more accurately emulate the player's digits. We'll have to wait and see.

        Yeah, this struck me as well.

        What they could do is use the front facing camera to take a picture of your face as the game loads and then use the picture to determine an average skin tone. That could then determine what fingers you see in-game.

        I do hope they address this if they haven't already as it would be a shame to have what looks like an inventive, beautiful game marred by unintentional insensitivity.
