YouTube app coming to PS3 today
by Andrew Yoon, Aug 14, 2012 9:45am PDTAlthough the PS3 internet browser received a significant upgrade few months prior, it still didn't provide an ideal YouTube-watching experience. Whereas Xbox Live members could simply access a dedicated app, PS3 owners had to jump through cumbersome menus to (poorly) have a YouTube-on-TV experience. Well, starting today, watching cat videos on your big screen is going to get a bit easier.
An official YouTube app is rolling out today on the PS3, available once the PlayStation Store updates. This is a "completely new experience, designed for the big screen and PS3 controls." As such, you'll see it looks nothing like YouTube on Xbox or Vita.
You'll be able to sign-in to your YouTube account to access your subscribed content. The PlayStation.Blog points out that you can even watch official music videos through the app, meaning PS3 owners won't need a separate VEVO app. And while the PS3 version may lack Kinect support, it adds one nifty tech trick: using your phone as a remote. "With a quick pairing process, you can control YouTube on PS3 with a smartphone. Find a video on your phone and with a button it'll play on the big screen. While the video is playing you can control it from the phone, or keep browsing YouTube for the next one."
