As many Team Fortress 2 fans have already puzzled together, a new co-op mode is coming to Valve's free-to-play online shooter. Called "Mann vs Machine," this new mode has six human players waging "a desperate battle to stop a lethal horde of robots from deploying a bomb in one of Mann Co.'s many strongholds." Essentially, it is a horde mode. With robots. And in typical horde fashion, you'll be able to upgrade your abilities and weapons in between waves. Surviving will let you earn "incredible loot." The new mode will also be accommodated by brand new maps as well.

The mode will unlock on August 15th. To get yourself hyped, here's yet another comic and a brand new trailer:

Where were the spy and pyro?

Spy doesn't have a big gun and the Pyro doesn't have facial expressions so they would have hurt the OK Corral motif.

Wait until he finds out the original Fortress games were released in the late 1990s with Quake. And also it was valve he re-popularized it with Team Fortress Classic that came originally as part of Half LIfe (the first one) multiplayer.

I find "I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THIS" posts to pretty weak in general, especially when you have to do it over multiple threads. Go post in the MNC thread. Oh wait, there hasn't been one for a long time...

Name me one original FPS that didn't take elements from other games of the time. I honestly can't think of one. This game mode for instance is pretty much is as old as time as far as multiplayer fps games go. You had mods for UT (Invasion) that did exactly this.

It's not who does what game mode first but who does it best or in a fun way. I don't see why haxim is so upset or why people care much about who was there first.

Killing hoards of robots is so Phantom Menace. Now, what we REALLY need is L4D3. There's something visceral and rewarding about blowing off bloody limbs from crazy, blood-thirsty people. A robot just wants to shoot you, a zombie want's to tear you apart with its teeth and nails and eat you.

Although, I'm a bit biased - I've only played 15 minutes of TF and thought it was silly and for kids. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I'm no big TF2 guy but we don't need a L4D3 anytime soon.

They've done that, a lot. Let them focus on something else for a while.

never updated. MS charges $50,000 a patch, so developers launch on console and then run.

In TF2's case, Valve had a much bigger issue with Microsoft's general policy of not releasing free DLC.

bug fix patches and updates are two different things as I recall. They charge that much to prevent people from taking advantage of MS's cert as an opportunity to bug test their game.

the reasoning is because MS won't allow Valve to do content updates to the game without selling it. Valve obviously wants to give it away for free.

Valve is in this to make money as much as MS is. I will say Valve's philosophy on how to achieve that goal is more fun for the customer more often than not.

I have yet to see proof they actually worded it that way. Do provide if you can, because I'm really interested in whether they said this or not.

They did release major updates for L4D though, just not as much as for TF2, but that's understandable as TF2 is their cash cow.
