En Masse Entertainment, publisher of the action-combat-oriented MMO Tera, has laid off an unspecified number of employees to "prepare for the next chapter of our business." The publisher has promised continued support for the MMO despite the job cuts.

A tweet by community manager Evan "Scapes" Berman said he had been let go by the company, and later tweeted that the layoffs were "not based on performance." En Masse publishing VP Chris Lee later confirmed the layoffs (via Massively):

Today, we had to let go of some of the great talent at En Masse Entertainment. While a tough decision, it was necessary as we prepare for the next chapter of our business. TERA has been a great launch for us, and we are committed to our loyal players. We're taking measures to align the needs of our business to continue supporting TERA and preparing for our future.

The company has promised to help those employees find new jobs and is encouraging other companies to email En Masse if they are looking for help. Tera launched May 1 to a good response, but may have suffered a setback when Diablo 3 launched two weeks later.

No one wants to pay $15 a month for an MMO these days. Dumb. Blizzard raked in all the moneys with WoW. It's over. That model doesn't work for other games very well.

EvE Online excluded obviously but they are a niche player-base anyway.

i feel really bad for the people making Elder Scrolls Online right now. Especially the grunt coworkers who have to know by now that whatever deathmarch they have in store for them isn't going to be worth it. I mean surely anyone with talent has already left that studio by now right?

Considering the reaction to the E3 demo and what's happening with TOR, I can't imagine that team is all that enthused at this point.

It really just boggles my mind why they went the direction they did. I mean you have Skyrim, and then...those screenshots of the upcoming MMO? Strange, but I don't make the big bucks. *shrugs*

i think with the right team who knows how the MMO climate is changing and is willing to roll with it, they'll be fine. they just have to look at the landscape and know that the old way is not the winning way anymore.

In game on my Tera server (Dragonfall) Chrono scrolls can be had for about 1000g. Those scrolls are worth 1 month of free game time for your account. So in theory you can sub and never have to pay another monthly payment.

I wish the employees well. But layoffs hit every MMO dev after launch.

In the end, I think MMO's just haven't evolved as much as they'd like to think. Ya, TOR had all spoke dialog, and that added a certain immersion factor for me, but it didn't increase the fun. In fact, I kinda think the smaller encounters limited the fun - but this coming from someone who loved the mass aoe attacks from the old EQ days. TOR did a nice job of telling a story, but turns out that's now what mmo's ar about, or why we play them (one of the best single player games you can play with your friends - is what I keep hearing from most).

      Gotta innovate the grinding
      Make the pre-endgame more useful
Keep the endgame more compelling so you don't feel you're done as soon as you get there

Think I spent more time doing pvp and space combat than actual questing in TOR. sad.

That's funny, I always thought the point was raiding, PVP, or having large persistent worlds. But point taken, I'm not sure how people are aghast that an MMO is grindy. Which TERA really isn't as people hit level cap from headstart -> launch in a mere two days.

Knew this was coming. I cannot stand the art style, these Asian MMOs just don't do well here. As soon as I saw anime character with swords 100000x too big to swing I instantly knew: FAIL. Who the hell wants to play some pansy goth looking cry baby character. Or some female caster that looks like she is trying to be a Rockette while trying to scrap shit off the soles of her boots while casting. I cannot play that shit as I need my MMO character to be cool looking. I'm sure its cool over East, but here that shit don't fly.
