Grid 2 racing out in 2013

Following a cheeky tease last week, Codemasters today properly announced the return of its race 'em up series Grid in Grid 2. Headed to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2013, Codies says it boasts a new handling system which should "hit a sweetspot between accessibility and simulation."

Grid 2 will offer four decades of "automotive icons" to zoom around in, on street, road and circuit tracks in places including Paris, Abu Dhabi and Miami. Multiplayer will offer a "unique progression system," and be tied up with Codemasters' RaceNet community doodad.

"We're pushing boundaries once again with what can be accomplished in the genre via new tools, technology and innovations. In single-player, split-screen and online, the next-generation of the Ego Game Technology Platform will power graphics, AI, handling and damage advancements that will immerse players in the racing experience like never before," executive producer Clive Moody said in the announcement.

Here's the announcement trailer and we do have a few screenshots, though do be aware that Codies has a habit of releasing media prettier than the actual game turns out to be:

      Yeah. This.

      A lot.

Still, the first game was a solid simcade racer so here's to hoping that the sequel carries on that tradition. And hopefully they sidestep GFWL integration since it did nothing for the DiRT series.

"In-car view is out, after Codemasters' research discovered that 95 per cent of players use chase or bonnet cameras to play." (from Eurogamer)

:( that was always my favourite view

A shame, but understandable given the resources to make it. That shit always gave me a headache but it was kinda cool.

Yeah it seems like a crazy resource waste considering only 5% of their player base uses it. My times may not have been great, but I loved playing all their games in cockpit mode.

I can't believe they are actually scrapping in-car view. I've waited years for the announcement of this game and now all that hype has gone out the window. I can't believe they would actually remove the one feature that made GRID what it is (at least for me). GRID was the first racing car in which I actually used the in-car view because it was so well made and immersive. And their excuse is a load of crap. Where did they get those bullshit stats from?
I'm waiting on a petition to keep this in the game...

I see nothing there that says GRID to me. Where are my drivetrain / chassis explosions? Where is the track art? Where is LeMans? Where is the drift system? Where are the 8 different classifications?

I loved GRID. It was the perfect sim-lite, gorgeous and exciting. This says same as everyone else to me.
