The Half-Life remake mod Black Mesa really is coming, and now a leaked video confirmed as real has surfaced with a peek at its jazzed-up 'On a Rail' chapter. You know, that frightful section with the tedious trains then glorious rocket launch.

The footage leaked to ValveTime is a rough cut of a planned gameplay video the Black Mesa team put together, Black Mesa team member 'Raminator' has responded, which somehow got into the wild early.

"The build featured in the video is between four and five weeks old," he explained. "You won't be seeing very many changes between what's in the video and what's in the final product."

As for the iron sights aiming seen on the revolver, a feature not in the original Half-Life, that's only available for the .357 and crossbow, boosting accuracy a little but lowering firing speed. After fans grumbled about seeing this in the leaked video, an option's been added to disable it.

Raminator says that following the leak, the team is going to be "moving some things forward" when it comes to showing us more of the long, long, long-in-development mod.

Some frankly unwatchable footage of an early version of the 'Surface Tension' chapter has also been leaked, though darned if I can see anything in it.

Yeah, you can, it takes skill, like actual skill. To conserve ammo, keep your face in tact. That's why games were good back in the day, they made you think about your decisions.

Same dialogue as in the original half-life!

Now the voice acting itself, that was a bit harsh.

I'd rather they concentrate on the art and just use the same voices from the original.

Huh...strange..are they hoping to sell this in the future then? Because you'd think they could have worked something out with Valve if they were doing it for free.

I just hope they (or someone) offers an option to yank the files out of your original HL installation and import them into the game. It'd be cool if they personally do it and you could toggle on/off what sounds to want at will. Want the original voice work? Want the original music? Original gun sounds? etc. etc.

Yeah I don't get it? If it requires HL1/2 to play the game then ... why can't it have that? It makes no sense to me.

I think my interest in this just dropped significantly. No wonder it's taking so long. Some of the parts of HL1 are the iconic sounds, I was hoping they would remain.

I'm not sure why anyone would've have expected otherwise. Did you watch the video? They nailed the sound effects.

Give the guys some slack its a total recreation mod done by a few people on there own time. If this was a real development studio I could understand the criticism if this was a paid game. The footage still looks amazing for what it is.

Have to agree. For something of this scope it requires a lot of hours to do it right. Seeing as how these people do it in the spare time between work, sleep, and family I can't complain too much.

We have to be critical somewhere though. Would it be fair to say that they just have too large a scope to begin with?

BTW, the person who slapped the host of the vid with a DMCA takedown has done so illegally. Assets that are a copy of an IP owned by another company are not subject to copyright laws. Further, this video is almost certainly covered by the "fair use" clause

he may not like that this got leaked but he really has no legal standing to submit DMCA takedowns on a derivative work.

People have issued DMCA take downs for news broadcasts on YT, when they have no affiliation with the network. You don't need legal standing, anyone can apparently do it.
