Day Z passes a million players

The Day Z mod has surpassed one million unique players in only four months.

People might be getting tired of zombies, but they apparently aren't getting tired of hyper-realistic games that border on the impossible. Sheer gamer masochism is the only possible explanation for the Day Z mod having surpassed a whopping one million unique players today, after only four months on the market.

The Day Z Mod site ticked past the threshold and the development team sent out word with a tweet. More than 2.1 billion zombies have been killed, which might make Day Z sound like a relatively zombie-free paradise. But that assumption would be wrong since almost 4 million characters have been straight-up murdered by other players. As usual in horror fiction, man is the real monster.

That's just the kind of breakout success that might tempt players and publishers to come for its standalone version, which is hoping to launch later this year as long as things go smoothly.

What a massive success story Day Z has been. Kind of reminds me of Minecraft in some ways.

What exactly is so good about this game?

For me it's the sum of everything it offers. Exploration, teamwork, killing things, loot, vehicles, the feeling of christmas as a kid when you find that one amazing piece of gear, the feeling of being kicked in the nuts when you die and lose said piece of amazing gear.

It's kind of the dream zombie game everyone wanted instead of generic shooters with zombies that companies keep making

In my opinion it's the strong, raw emotion the game creates in a player that makes it so amazing.

There is something about the potential perma-death of your character and fellow survivors that makes the intensity of everything in the game many orders of magnitude more meaningful.

That enemy player you just choose to take down and loot? Yeah, he just lost everything. You are a true bad ass.

That sneak fail you just pulled leading to a losing fight again a zombie horde? Massive intensity followed by the devastation of losing all that hard earned gear.

That sprint across and open field praying each step of the way there isn't a bandit watching you from the tree line? Endless seconds of intense worry followed by a real sigh of relief when you make it.

That silenced MP5 your just found along with the appropriate clips of ammo? Complete elation mixed with a sense of "please God do not let me die and lose this gun".

I spotted someone driving around an airfield on our lingor server tonight. They seemed to leave and I lost sight of them. A while later Sigpro spots them near a helicoprter crash, pops one of them but gets killed. I run down to they're location put a couple silenced rounds into one of them and the rest scatter. I jump in their idling SUV and take off as they are shooting the vehicle. My heart was racing for a few minutes afterwards.

I missed the summer sale on the Arma2 pack so I have yet to buy this. Hopefully people will still be playing when the winter sales roll around.

I would love to work on a cartoony version of this. With TF2/Brink styled characters, huge map. Just surviving. Oh man. I really want to find some investors.

The amazing part to me is the 1 million unique players actually have managed to fight their way through the hell that is learning the ArmA 2 GUI!

I hope a lot of those players also play the campaign games in ArmA 2, along with some of the player made content campaigns. Just like Day Z, it's a great, great combat simulation experience - IF you can learn the GUI lol.

I kinda want to play this but I don't think I've ever seen a vid of someone playing it where massive glitches occur. The zombies run in weird paths, for example, or people climb ladders facing backwards. It seems like it would kinda kill the immersion.

Zombies zig zagging is normal as far as I know, if they ran straight at you then it would be easy. Also that zig zag is only when you initially aggro them. If you run away then they continue after you in a straight line.

Honestly these little things don't mean much - the game is still fucking awesome.

That respawning you and your wife were doing was fucking up the server every time it created your new character to the point of a noticeable delay that everyone experiences. Something else needs to be considered to make it easier for friends to start together, but the respawning from hundreds of thousands of players needed to end.
