Rise of the Triad revival announced at QuakeCon

Rise of the Triad was officially announced at QuakeCon today, and it's due out later this year via Steam.

QuakeCon kicked off today with the (not entirely surprising) official announcement of Rise of the Triad. Apogee Software and Interceptor Entertainment showed off a gameplay video and announced that the title will be playable on the show floor. The Unreal Engine 3 game is set for release on PC via Steam later this year.

The game will have you taking on a role in the High-Risk United Nations Taskforce (HUNT) with five unique characters and a 20-stage single-player campaign. It will also feature a multiplayer mode, complete with signature weapons from the original ROTT like Flamewall, Firebomb, Split Missile, Drunk Missile, and Excalibat. It also includes the classic modes like God, Elasto, Mercury, Shrooms, and Dog modes. The game promises Steamworks functionality to build and share levels and mods, secrets and collectibles, and all of the old sounds and music intact.

"We were seeking a strong, independent, hard-working development partner to herald the eagerly-anticipated return of 'Rise of the Triad',” said Apogee CCO Terry Nagy in the announcement. "We have indeed found that partner in Interceptor Entertainment."

Looks...crap, tbh. And yes, I played the original when I was 10 or whatever.

Epic should just make a sequel to Bulletstorm, that was a fun ass 10 hours.

And I know this isn't by Epic, it's by Apogee and Interceptor, I'm just saying, Bulletstorm 2 would be good. And that this looks bad.

RotD one of the games I missed playing during that era but yeah, it didn't look all that good . If it didn't have RotD attached to it people would be calling it either a $10 value game or a ipad game.

Kind of ironic that it's an Unreal engine game.

That's what happens when most devs have been playing with Unreal Engine 3 for the past 5 years, and Id Tech 4 gets barely any commercial or mod adoption. Bethesda also shot themselves in the foot by making Id Tech 5 a Bethesda-only engine.

The original Rise of the Triad was based off of a heavily modified Wolfenstein engine. The levels were grid-based with pushwalls; the major features were variable level height (for the whole level), jump pads, floating platforms (which were sprites), and sky textures. Doom was more advanced, but ROTT was zanier.

is this the game where you'd shoot those motherfuckers, and they'd go down on the ground and beg for their lives, and as soon as you turned your back on them they'd start shooting you again?

Nothing like remaking a popular old game to lock down the amount of innovation you can introduce. I see a lot of game elements that went out of style for a reason, combined with fancy graphics and a slapped on physics engine. Not exactly thrilling.
