Rise of the Triad revival announced at QuakeCon
by Steve Watts, Aug 02, 2012 12:30pm PDTQuakeCon kicked off today with the (not entirely surprising) official announcement of Rise of the Triad. Apogee Software and Interceptor Entertainment showed off a gameplay video and announced that the title will be playable on the show floor. The Unreal Engine 3 game is set for release on PC via Steam later this year.
The game will have you taking on a role in the High-Risk United Nations Taskforce (HUNT) with five unique characters and a 20-stage single-player campaign. It will also feature a multiplayer mode, complete with signature weapons from the original ROTT like Flamewall, Firebomb, Split Missile, Drunk Missile, and Excalibat. It also includes the classic modes like God, Elasto, Mercury, Shrooms, and Dog modes. The game promises Steamworks functionality to build and share levels and mods, secrets and collectibles, and all of the old sounds and music intact.
"We were seeking a strong, independent, hard-working development partner to herald the eagerly-anticipated return of 'Rise of the Triad',” said Apogee CCO Terry Nagy in the announcement. "We have indeed found that partner in Interceptor Entertainment."

The original Rise of the Triad was based off of a heavily modified Wolfenstein engine. The levels were grid-based with pushwalls; the major features were variable level height (for the whole level), jump pads, floating platforms (which were sprites), and sky textures. Doom was more advanced, but ROTT was zanier.
