Planescape Kickstarter being considered by Obsidian dev

Many designers have flocked to Kickstarter in an attempt to revive old gaming franchises. Obsidian's Chris Avellone, lead designer of Planescape: Torment, is interested in creating a "spiritual successor" to the the series.

His game would "ignore the D&D mechanics and respect what Planescape was trying to do and what the game did and see if you can do what Fallout did when it became the spiritual successor to Wasteland."

"With Torment, I'd argue that the D&D base actually, in places, got in the way of the experience," Avellone told GI.biz. "It was a lot harder to make a game with those ideas in it than with D&D mechanics. So much that we had to break a lot of them."

Avellone admits that he's "very tempted" to send the project to Kickstarter. However, he understands the challenges associated with crowd-funding. "I think people already are getting tired of hearing about it. People are also running out of money for it."

While Avellone mulls over the possibility of creating the game, he's not the only one interested in reviving the series. Beamdog has also expressed interest in reviving Torment.
