Square Enix: Final Fantasy Versus 13 still alive

Last week, an unconfirmed rumour was swirling that Square Enix had quietly cancelled Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which we've barely seen since it was announced in 2006. Untrue, Square Enix said today, this is a load of poppycock, and development is coming along swimmingly.

Company president Yoichi Wada denied the rumour on Twitter in Japanese (via Andriasang), which Eurogamer has translated thusly:

There's someone making a false rumour that Versus was cancelled. Haha... just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, it'd knock you off your feet - lol.

So there you have it, if you believe the president of the company making the game over an unconfirmed rumour--which can be a difficult call at times, but seems relatively straightforward here. Look, here's an old Versus XIII trailer full of shiny things to dazzle, delight and distract you:

They use 'w' which is short for 'warai' which means smile/laugh and is often used the same way LOL is in English. This is his original post:

        ヴェルサスがキャンセルされたってデマ流してるやつがいるらしい。フフ..たった今ヴェルサス定例会議が終わったとこ。今日プレゼンされた街なんぞ見たら腰抜かすでぇ~w

So you're telling me Kotaku's "contact" was full of crap? What is this world coming to?

It's Kotaku, their sources are always crap which in turn makes them crap.

Well if you think about it, as a result of the rumor they started we were able to get confirmation that versus is in fact still in production. I know I wasn't the only one who had their doubts before the rumor

Yeah, it's a sign that Square's PR plan for VS XIII is a terrible plan when there's complete silence, and the first rumor of trouble touches off comments of the game getting silently canned. I'll probably get flak from the industry Shackers for saying this, but IMO, when that happens, you have to say something, and show something. Don't just tweet "it's not dead" and then go into radio silence for another 18 months.

Meh, cheapest possible PR response. "No, it's not canned; no further comment." Same thing that Pete Hines did for Doom 4 earlier this year.

Maybe it is too early in the PR schedule to announce something more substantial, but doing that would garner more respect than having the VP of PR or the CEO tweet, "It's not canned." That said, we'll have to try to be satisfied with this response, for now.

This should have been a lesson to Square that they shouldn't keep in the dark for so long, but they probably not going to change anytime soon :(

Drat. Frankly, I had truly grown sick of hearing about this game, and just when I thought the constant delays and non-news about this 6 year old fossil were finally over, here we go again...SquareEnix really needs to learn how to finish games in a more reasonable amount of time and move on.
