The Origin client was in a sorry state when EA relaunched its digital distribution platform, especially compared to the mighty Steam, but it has been improving. Thirteen months later, client version 9.0 is coming, and what can we expect from this revision? User interface changes, mostly. "Your suggestions and feedback over the past few months have driven many of the changes you'll see in Origin 9.0," EA explains in a blog post. Lots of people asked for a UI makeover, it seems. Regular drop-down menus have now been added, replacing the unhelpful buttons. The friends list can be moved around or closed. The in-game overlay now features a clock, for time-keeping purposes. You can also resize the bafflingly-large box art in the library. EA notes that it has "improved the overall performance of the client" too. Origin 9.0 is due "in the coming days." You can give it a bash now by opening up the Settings menu, scrolling down to the "Origin Pre-Release Participation" section, and ticking the "Update to pre-release version if available" box.

One friends list, to go

Origin has lots of problems. Oddly enough, its UI was the least of it.

I sure hope they put in code to remove expired betas this time.

Origins sole virtue is that it sucks less than GFWL. That's not saying much, is it?

it totally has UI problems. I couldnt figure out how to activate my battlefield premium maps.

I had to click around for 10 minutes to find where the download button was. it kept taking me to my main screen.

too bad it's a piece of shit cargo cult copy of steam still that does nothing new or novel

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/hardcore-gamers-have-issues-with-ea-origin/099634 and apparently it's all our fault for not *getting* origin~

who cares about new or novel. If it eventually matches Steam, I'm ok with that. Valve can lead and EA can copy. I'm cool with this.

Hrm. I'm still getting 8.6.3.49, even if I untick the opt-in, let it download an older v8, then re-tick the opt-in and let it update again.

Ahh I have to say I am extremely unhappy with origin from the start for so many reasons. But really what bubbles up to the top is further fragmenting my online gaming profile and purchasing experience. I understand steam might need competition and that's fine, but in the end if they really want to see us all hop on the digital train they better allow every one who creates a digital distribution service to talk each other perfectly or users will just fly off the handle every time another dds comes out leading to overly complex and fragmented purchasing experiences resulting in people going back to gamestop. FUCK YOU ORIGIN.

I made this kind of comment when digital distribution just started. That, if every publisher had their own client (and subsequently store), that shopping for games would be come too cumbersome for the average shopper and would mostly just drag the industry down. Then Steam became the clear leader and that kinda went away for a good while.

Ya, nothing wrong with competition. But, I don't want to see EA be #2 mostly because that'll just tempt Activision and THQ to throw their hats into the ring and we'll have more online stores and matching clients to deal with.

I get that EA is getting into this end because they see money on the table and as a way to fight piracy. But, in the end it just fragments the market too much. At least GFWL doesn't jack with the distribution piece of it. I'm not advocating GFWL, but I can at least live with that inside my Steam library vs yet another distribution client.

Well, I say all that about GFWL but I'll call it now that MS is looking to change that with Windows 8 and all the integrated stuff I just saw about Windows 8, Phone 8 and now Office. MS's strategy is becoming clearer and I can see pulling GFWL inside that ecosystem as well. So, they will be a competitor to steam. But, I can also it evolving to be more of a general digital distribution channel and not just focused on games. Which, based on that article on Engadget I read yesterday, Steam may already be aware of and is making plans to counter that strategy as well. Kudos if they see it already.

GFWL is absolutely the worst of them all. I tried only once buying dlc for fallout 3 and literally had to login to 3+ times, create 2 new accounts, only then to have the download fail for no apparent reason constantly with no description about how to actually activate the dlc. Absolutely terrible, never went back go GFWL. I'm just glad steam set the bar so high that in order to compete you have to be as good as them, and both GFWL and Origin are not there yet.

origin needed to do this right as a STEAM SALE is occurring, to stay relevant. we are seeing why steam is vastly superior, delivering games from lots of publishers to a huge install base.

and then EA has to try and exert their influence and say LOOK OUR GAMING CLIENT IS AWESOME.

I know Steam was a bit rocky when it first launched, but EA's ORIGIN just seems hopelessly pathetic. I HATE HATE HATE having to launch it (and then a freakin web browswer) to play BF3 ...

It really is - and people say "oh buy steam was bad in the start" guess what fuck faces - nothing like Steam existed at the time - Origin had fucking itunes and steam and fuck knows what else to copy and they didn't.
        Cause they are dumb

and their name database / accounts in the backend are A MAMMMMMOTH epic /UT voice/ clusterfuck.

Exactly! Also, with the recent comments from EA's CEO, it's obvious that the main purpose of Origin had NOTHING to do with providing value to consumers. It was all about DRM and lock-in to a truly crappy piece of software.

Did I mention the database at the backend being STUPID AND SHIT. On steam I have one single account (ok, I admit 2 stupid accounts if you post on the steam forums) but with EA / Origin I have EA Master ID's and EA Need for speed ID's and my BF Heroes ID and god it's just a giant cunt mess.
