If you've always been intrigued by building Rube Goldberg-style contraptions, Rovio's latest release, Amazing Alex, should be right up your alley. It's available now on the iTunes and Android app stores.

After the huge success of Rovio's Angry Birds series, the company was looking for a new project. It acquired the rights to Casey's Contraptions in May and turned it into this physics-based puzzler.

The game is available for iPhone and Android for 99 cents and iPad for $2.99.

Apparently it's just Crazy Contraptions bought by Rovio, renamed and new training levels inserted. They even pulled the original from the app store.

I didn't realise that developers could separate the prices between iPhone and iPad versions of apps, is this a common occurrence?

They can if they make the iPad version a separate app. The iPad version of Amazing Alex is actually called Amazing Alex HD.

It allows you to charge more for the iPad version, although you can buy the iPhone version and run it zoomed in. Apps which have both versions are Universal apps. Some games have a different iPhone, iPad and Universal versions depending on what you want to spend.
