Dont Link That MP3!
by Steve Gibson, Jun 27, 2000 6:11am PDTWell, it looks like you dont even have to host MP3 files to break the law anymore. The RIAA is now going after websites that even link an MP3 file. Somehow the RIAA feels that this lawsuit isnt about linking, but something about "what they know and what they dont know" according to an RIAA Here:
"If this kind of automated hyperlinking is ruled illegal, the Internet is going to grind to a halt," said Ira Rothken, legal counsel for MP3Board.com. [snip] This is about the fact that the sources MP3Board.com are linking to are blatantly pirate sites which they are aware of." says Steve Fabrizio, for the RIAA.This has some pretty serious implications. Basically this could be carried over to any kind of known linking of anything illegal if you want to get nice an vague. I wonder if someone who runs a MP3 messageboard could get sued because of users posting links...

Not only is this MP3 crap becoming more and more of a 'legal' issue daily, but the actual mainstream music is nothing but a bunch of boy-band, trendy ass, talk-to-a-beat unoriginal lucky talentless bastards who suck on the teets of the easily influenced MTV watching public.
Seriously you guys, think about it. Dre, Emineim, Snoop, Backdoor boys, Spears, and all those other simple-minded pricks can't even read sheet music.
"Sing this note. AAAAAAAAA!"
"Now you, sing this note. OOOOOOOO."
"WOW! You're HARMONIZING!"
And don't get me started with these hip-hop 'artists:'
Artist, "Okay, you thump on that key for 4 beats, then do this."
Keyboard guy, "Can't I add a cool little dealie along with a quintuplet arpeggio--"
Artist, "NO! We have to keep it simple to appeal to the mainstream and be on MTV! It's all about the MONEY!"
I'm sure there are some of 'em out there that may actually have real musical knowledge, but I haven't heard any. Maybe someone here can actually prove me wrong.
As someone who has a a decent understanding of music, the majority of the Top 10 is so damn simple, it's insulting. I wonder what Mozart would think if he heard all this crap today. :)
There are exceptions, mostly in the rock/metal area where most of the bands can read, play, and write their own music. A small piece of the many: Dream Theater, From Zero (underground band ;), Staind, Pantera, Days of the New, Alice In Chains, and a shitload more.
Ahh, yet another flame war. BLAARRRGH!

anyone out there still think this country is a democracy?
Don't bother. Just get a good newsreader like newsgrabber that makes downloading multipart binaries super easy and harvest usenet dailey. It helps to have a fast connection. Or get bullitproof ftp and make some friends on irc.
Don't forget to schmooze, bribe and blackmail your friends for access to their cds to rip. I like MusicMatch for no other reason then it has the best codec - Fraunhofer - for the highest sound quality.
Save for random crap from MP3.com. I remember the old days.. using Yahoo or Altavista search engines to look for some random alternative song.
Intereting.
Give it a rest, RIAA, and get the message already: lower your damn CD prices already, you scumbags!
In the past there has been much ado about some artists 'stealing' other artists songs (well pieces of them) and inserting them into their own. When sued however they said that they didn't steal or violate any copyrights because they were....... SAMPLING. Yes and so practice continues to this day.
Since MP3's are 'near CD quality' but not quite. One could argue that MP3's containing copyrighted material are just a form of SAMPLING and therefore perfectly legal. :P
any thoughts?
News flash, US government.. You don't have SHIT for authority on the internet.
RIAA has even less.

You know this is all becuase of the precendent-based US/British law. Under French law for example, they could rule on this case one way or another and it wouldn't have any horrible repercussions in the future because the judges wouldn't have to take this under account in future lawsuits. I think that's a better way of doing this...
Seriously, the sites blantant enough to list "pirate MP3s" should get slapped around a little IMHO. Join me brothers and sisters in bringing back the all might BBS system and Wildcat!!!!

Someone wanted to send me a .wav file and I refused saying its to big of a file and that they should RA or MP3 encode it first then send it. They were like MP3? Thats illegal... *sigh* keep in mind that this was a recording of their own voice. Yes they were a newbie, but the point is that there is no distinction. MP3's are NOT illegal. Distributing copyrighted material is. If it happens to be in the form of an MP3, then that particular MP3 IS ILLEGAL.
