Pitfall revival in the works at Activision

Activision Leeds has confirmed that its first mobile game won't be a Call of Duty title at all, but rather an update of the classic Pitfall.

We heard rumblings late last week that Activision's new mobile studio based in Leeds, UK would be heading up the company's mobile Call of Duty efforts. Though Activision hasn't commented on those reports, one member of the studio has confirmed that its first game won't be Call of Duty at all, but rather the Atari classic Pitfall.

"The first game we are making is in fact Pitfall, which is 30 years old this year," new studio head Martyn Brown told MCV. "We've been working on Pitfall since earlier in the year when we set up and it has been really good to revisit that and bring it to a modern audience."

As for the scuttlebutt of Call of Duty involvement, Brown didn't offer much clarification. "In setting up there has been a lot of interest given the publisher we are working with. In the third week of May we revealed we had the studio, and yes it is based in Leeds, and we have hired some key talent in the form of Mark Washbrook and Mark Lloyd [formerly of Rockstar Games]."

So the studio's debut game will be Pitfall, but without an outright denial of CoD involvement, it could go on to create or pitch in on Call of Duty mobile titles as well. This year may be too soon for Leeds to step in as the Call of Duty mobile studio, but it is an annualized franchise after all.

call me old, or just hard to please, but all sequels done of this game have never done the original justice. I hope they can put together a good Pitfall game, one as challenging and fun as the original.

Another remake in title only. I guess it gets them a little extra press because of bits like this one, but clearly there isn't anyone in their target audience going "oh man! i loved the shit out of that on the 2600 and this will be like that!"

There was a remake around 2004-ish that didn't suck. Wasn't great, but was enjoyable.

Some kind of 2.5D mobile touchscreen optimized version, that wasn't just a Temple Run rip, might be interesting. Although, I guess the basic premise of Pitfall really is Temple Run.
