Square Enix recently commented that it wouldn't dare remake Final Fantasy VII until it had surpassed it with a new FF. If you, like me, are a PC gamer with no real connection to the series and have no idea why it's so beloved, you'll seen get to see for yourself, as Squeenix today confirmed the leak that the JRPG's been revamped for a PC re-release.

Final Fantasy VII was released for PC back in 1998, but is a bit tricky to get ahold nowadays and disagrees somewhat with modern hardware and operating systems. As well as, presumably, not requiring fiddling and fussing to run on your shiny modern PC, the revamp boasts new features.

It'll pack 36 achievements for you to collect, cloud saves (no, not Cloud saves ha ha what a joke!) so you can keep your progress across multiple computers, and a new 'Character Booster' which lets you boost your HP, MP and Gil levels to the max and get on with the game. Plus, of course, it doesn't require a ton of fiddling to get working.

When will you get to play it? "Soon" is all Square Enix has to offer. Curiously, the publisher says it'll be available "exclusively" on its own store, but surely it wouldn't be that daft in this modern wonderful of digital distribution? Hit the official site for more information.

Unless they redo the pre-rendered backgrounds, I think it will look horrible. I can't tell if they claimed whether they were doing that. I hope so!

The question is is anything going to be done to the graphics HDed at all?

The game has already been released on the PC so it be nice if they juice it up.

      Cool news still.

I can only imagine how bad the backgrounds will looked stretched out to a 1080P resolution. AA on the polys is no big deal.

I played through it on PS3 not that long ago and it still looked somewhat okay on my big TV. I don't think I have it in me to play it again, though...

Well, I had the PC port years ago, and the biggest complaint THEN was the backgrounds not scaling well to 640x480 or whatever the polys were at. I can only imagine it will be worse.

At the very least I would expect it to look as good as modern playstation emulators can make it look with backrounds looking okay, but the battle sequences being very clean.

So far, only Chrono Trigger has grabbed me out of all the SNES and PS1 JRPGs, partly because it dodged the grind and random battles partly because it's fucken Chrono Trigger. I also enjoyed Panzer Dragoon Saga on Saturn for the original setting and unique dragon combat.

Oh you bastard... I've always wanted to play Panzer Dragoon Saga but that game is like some kind of mythical holy grail. They must have printed like 10 copies of that game because I could never find one.

You should be able to get through the main story with very little, if any, grinding. If you want to do some of the extra stuff then ya, you'll be grinding.

Correct. I don't want to play this on my PC. I played it on my PC a decade ago. Give me an iOS version (skip the mini games if you have to) and/or a 360 version. The only PC video game I play right now is Diablo 3 and before that I have pretty much been ignoring pc games for YEARS.

They should make it fully modable and just let the FF fans remake the game in HD for them.

Never actually played this game and always kind of wanted to. But man those cut scenes look AWFUL! I remember being blown away by FFVII screens back in the day. I remember thinking "someday we'll be playing games which look like this in real-time.." But we are SO way beyond in real-time what those cut scenes looked like back then it's kind of embarrassing.

This game was really bad when it released, the story was just....I will be honest I had no idea what was going on for most of this game when I first played it. Just wish it was something new not this.

huh? They've made new final fantasy games for quite a while. This is last Final Fantasy I gave a crap about. I tried 8 and threw up when I realized that I had to grind just to get spell uses and that each minor battle took 5 minutes. I tried X and got bogged down, bored and gave up.

"If you, like me, are a PC gamer with no real connection to the series and have no idea why it's so beloved"

The irony is that the only thing people really were drawn to were the fancy CG cut scenes because the perceived "pretty" videos were a new thing to console gamers. As a PC gamer you were already exposed to far better. This game was not nearly as good as people claim it to be and it will feel dated/clunky to you as a PC gamer.

I would be happy so long as the sound is not midi based, any (if any) game enhancement beyond that is unnecessary.
HD graphics would be nice but I'm sure that would fall more in the realm of remake
