Lords of Shadow dev wants to reboot Contra

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow developer MercurySteam wants to move on to another Konami franchise: Contra.

MercurySteam's upcoming Lords of Shadow 2 marks the end of the re-imagined Castlevania trilogy. Once that story is done, what can we expect from producer David Cox and his team? Apparently, he has his sights on Contra.

"I know there's going to be pressure on us to do another Castlevania game, but I don't want to rise to that pressure," Cox told VG247. "I want to do something else. I love Contra. I'd love to do Contra. At MercurySteam we've got an original idea that I think is really awesome. We'd love to bring that idea to market and I'm hoping that the success of Lords of Shadow 2 will allow us to do that."

So why does the developer want to step away from vampires and the undead? "We kind of feel vindicated that the game did so well," he said. "It's the best-selling Castlevania game ever. So that for us is vindication that we did the right thing. What sort of legacy do you want to leave? I'm proud of the games we've made but we've got other things we want to do. Other worlds we want to explore. Other stories we want to tell. We want to go out with a bang."

I'd love a new contra game. I played the fuck out of Contra 4.

Same here. I thought WayForward did a great job. If anyone should get dibs on a Contra remake, I think it should be them, if they're interested.

yeah well start looking forward to a 3rd person over the shoulder cover shooter with recharging health and an insane story that doesn't make any sense.

Contra 3 on the SNES is epic(my fav of all time) 4 was rad on the DS it was hard core quality to felt like a real Contra game. Even the Wii ware version was quality Contra Rebirth I chucked my wii a long time ago but fans should really check it out on a emulator.

Still one of the most over looked new Contra games is by far --> Hard Corps Uprising the game is hard core, insane and quality at the same time, its defiantly not candy this thing is hard core 90% proof alcohol but still has a sexy ass.

Nice, a very raw gritty Contra, it was quality and tough, controls a bit floaty for my taste but it was good.

uprising is fun but i really dislike the aesthetic. i mean, it looks good, very bright and silly but i really dislike it. i also did not care for the controls. way too convoluted for a contra game IMO.

the wiiware one i thought was great though. contra 4 was by far the best modern contra though, IMO of course. i liked it better than shattered solider or any of the other post 16 bit ones.

          so, IMO

          Contra
          Contra 3
          Super C
          Contra 4
          Shattered Soldier
          Rebirth
          Hard Corps
          Hard Corps Uprising

I want them to unboot Castlevania and give us a modern side scroller on a console.

I know you said console, but hey at least there's all the DS Castevania games. Those are great.

Yes, but we want a new one by IGA. Preferably on consoles, but we'll take which platform we can get. Proper HD sprite sidescrolling Metroidvania would be a gift from god, though.

Honestly I'm not convinced I want one by Iga. Dawn of Sorrow is the only CV games he's been involved with since SotN that I felt really approached it. The others have all paled in various ways.

make it a real game instead of a shitty 3DS game you beat on a train ride.

no man can beat contra 4 on a train ride. the rage induced would certainly disturb the balance of the tracks, resulting in a horrible crash.

Though the frigging lava jumping in the DLC is some of the most annoying shit I've ever done in a game. But still, yeah, overall it was a lot of fun.

A 3D contra would be awesome, but I think they'd need to be completely opposite the existing contra games. No more one-hit kills, but instead you're a bullet sponge and there'd be no cover whatsoever. Doom-style.
