The Last of Us multiplayer mode is 'not co-op'

"We are supporting multiplayer with The Last of Us," game director Neil Druckmann said. "However, we can say that it is not co-op within the main campaign."

Little is known about The Last of Us' mysterious "online component." An online co-op mode for both Joel and Ellie would be the obvious route to take--and that's not what Naughty Dog has in mind.

"We are supporting multiplayer with The Last of Us," game director Neil Druckmann told Gaming Examiner. "However, we can say that it is not co-op within the main campaign."

Naughty Dog's last game, Uncharted 3, featured a number of multiplayer modes, both cooperative and competitive. The Last of Us could feature a cooperative mode that lives outside of the campaign, similar to horde modes featured in other games. However, would a competitive experience work? It might be interesting to see if The Last of Us' lack of regen health and low ammo supplies can make for a different online experience.

The only online which would be interesting to me for this game would be something like Dark/Demon Souls where you see evidence of other people in the world but are not directly playing with them.

        I would love that!

That would be so unbelievably sick if that was it. However it would probably be some lame duck run-of-the-mill deathmatch type. :(

        I agree,

If it's any type of "competitive" MP, I think the gravity of the game might get belittled. I wonder if they'll do something like, one plays the main character with the girl, 6 others play as the other enemy survivors. Then again, I don't see the need of that kind of experience.

A Journey or Demon Souls like experience would make much more sense.

        This could be a part of single-player. Online-enhanced single-player.

What's going on with my replies. -.-

Anyway, I said this could be a part of single-player, just online-enhanced.

I'm calling it. They've hacked together a DayZ-lite mode, and it will be horrible.

How could that be horrible? Especially in an engine as seemingly competent as what the Last of Us has shown us.

Because it'll be a half baked effort to jump on the bandwagon. I'm happy to be proved wrong.

The way I see it, as long as ANY part of Day Z's gameplay gets co-opted by the mainstream, every gamer wins.

Day-Z is the definition of "half-baked". It's the very essence of half-baked. There is no better word to describe Day-Z than half-baked!

              It's an alpha?

Well most of what makes it feel so half-baked is in fact that core engine, which doesn't get the alpha excuse :P

Don't get me wrong I love Day-Z for what it is, but it is quite possibly the most janky experience I have ever had in a video game!

The vibe I got from this game was linear levels - I don't think they are building an open world explorer type game.

Because of that, I doubt they are making a DayZ-lite mode.

I think this article title is jumping to a conclusion that should not be jumped to!

His quote says "However, we can say that it is not co-op within the main campaign." (emphasis mine)

So it most certainly could be coop, but with a separate campaign.
