It's been a while since we've seen one of these, hasn't it? Tomorrow, the PS3 is getting yet another mandatory firmware update. Version 4.20 is a minor update, with owners of the Wireless Stereo Headset getting the most benefit. The system update improves "sidetone" performance when using the official PS3 headset, and also adds the ability to get virtual surround sound when watching Blu-ray and DVD movies.

4.20 will also revise default power save settings on the PS3. The system will automatically turn off after an hour of inactivity. This change is being made to be compliant with European regulations. However, you should still be able to alter it to your liking from the Settings area of the XMB.

Finally, saved data management has been tweaked. You will be able to select multiple saved data items and delete or copy them as a group.

i just bought plus. how well does the cloud saves work? i've set up my uncharted game to auto save to cloud and i saw somewhere that my shit synchs at like 4am-6am.

so is it as simple as going to a friend's PS3, adding my account to his PS3 and going to play the game? the friend does not have plus.

on the 360 the cloud saves seem so simple and the UI being such a mess on the PS3, I have no idea how it's going to work.

To load your cloud save on a different PS3, create a new system user by going all the way to the left on the XMB. Then, log in to your PSN account. Your cloud saves will appear under Saved Data under Game. Download whatever files you want off your cloud storage to that system.

Ah, never bothered to try that, but then again, I've never needed to. Handy to know for sure though.

thanks, i don't use my ps3 very often so i'm a bit behind in figuring out the XMB.

The saving part is simple, although it can be slightly annoying in that you have to opt for it the first time you play a new game.

I don't think it allows you to sync your saves on a friend's PS3 though - I may be wrong.

i hope it does otherwise it would be a pointless service. i can backup my saves to a flash drive if i really wanted to. I think AndrewYoon described it well enough that is sounds like it will work. maybe i'll bring the flash drive as a backup the first time just in case.

So, is this the one that secretly updates Cinavia so that we can't play even our own home movies if there happens to be a Sony movie on in the background? Cause that's an awesome feature.

Cinavia is the DRM built into the PS3 and is on both BluRay and (recently) regular DVDs. The DRM uses inaudible (higher frequency) sound as a "watermark". So, for example, if you're watching a downloaded movie, and the PS3 "hears" the audio watermark, it will kill off the audio playback. That's great and wonderful for stopping pirate, but if the audio is present in ANYTHING, you can't play it back on the PS3. So, in my example, if you're recording a home video of your kid playing in the living room, and a movie with Cinavia is on the TV in the background, your camera is still picking up that high frequency audio. If you go to play that cute clip of your kiddo back later, the PS3 assumes you're pirating movies, and shuts down the playback. Awesome feature huh?

If you're interested, here's a link to movies that have this horrible DRM embedded in them.
