When Nintendo said New Super Mario Bros 2 was all about the money, they weren't kidding. Nintendo has announced that New Super Mario Bros 2 will be the first game in the company's history to offer for-pay DLC after launch. Additional "Coin Rush" stages will be developed after the game comes out.

Although this may signal a change in Nintendo's strategy, NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime was quick to point out that NSMB2 will be "full featured," and that no content is being removed for the purposes of being made into DLC.

He says that there are no additional details to offer because the levels "haven't even been made yet," poking fun at other publishers that announce DLC details well before a game's launch. In addition to NSMB2, Nintendo has announced that the upcoming Fire Emblem game will also offer paid DLC.

“When we sell a game, we want the consumer to feel that they’ve had a complete experience. We’re unwilling to sell a piece of a game upfront and, if you will, force a consumer to buy more later. That’s what [Nintendo representatives] don’t want to do, and I completely agree. I think the consumer wants to get, for their money, a complete experience, and then we have opportunities to provide more on top of that.” - Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime

I agree with the Regginator. DLC should be extra content on top of a complete game instead of what the likes of Capcom, EA, etc are doing.

opportunities to provide more on top of that

chances are they'll release new level packs. on top of the full SMB game that i'm sure won't be anything short of what we've already seen come from Nintendo.

let's wait till we see exactly what the DLC is before lighting the torches.

It's an empty statement, because no developer has "forced" a consumer to buy DLC. And this is what they will hide behind when trying to justify it.

Those e-reader cards Nintendo sold back in the GBA days were sorta like DLC.

To reiterate somoene's point on Twitter last night, it is never a smart idea to announce this far in advance of a game's release that you have planned DLC ready for a game.

It's one thing to say you can support DLC, great. Or regularly-added new content. But if it is DLC just frickin' add it to the actual product!!!

that's exactly what they did. they announced the support for DLC. not that there actually will be any.

The takes I was getting from the Twitter blurbs implied it was ready or more that they had at least some DLC that was explicitly planned...

Checking sources that had time to think before posting, I see that they're wrong ( http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-22-new-super-mario-bros-2-dlc-details-revealed ) in that they have DLC plans but no DLC content will be generated until the game actually is done, which at least some point is reasonable.

The whole "did work on the DLC begin before or after the game was finished" is such a grating discussion.
At this point, resistance to DLC is a lost cause. Not sure why people are still getting pissed off.

Because Paid Multiplayer DLCs shatter game communities into the Haves and the Have Nots. And each additional MP DLC further shatters the community. Then you're ready for a new version of the game where everyone has the same maps/weapons packs; which is good, because they're trying to sell you that, the very next year.

For whatever reason, two Italian plumbers collecting coins seem oddly appropriate for the announcement that Nintendo is doing DLC.
