Free-to-play TimeSplitters envisioned by Crytek CEO

Crytek's CEO has stated that he'd love to see the TimeSplitters franchise return, though it'd likely be a free-to-play title, rather than a retail release.

Crysis 3 will be developer Crytek's final retail boxed product. Why? Because the company is becoming entirely focused on free-to-play games.

Warface is the developer's next major FPS title, and it will be free-to-play. However, CEO Cevat Yerli has since noted the possibility of a new TimeSplitters game as a free-to-play title, too. "I love TimeSplitters, I'm a huge TimeSplitters fan particularly of the multiplayer part. I love the idea, I love the brand, I love everything – but the publishers don't. That's reality," Yerli said.

Speaking to VideoGamer (via Joystiq), Yerli admits a desire to work on the game. However, he noted that "we can't develop it the way Free Radical had started it before we acquired [Free Radical]."

A shift to free-to-play could make a new TimeSplitters possible. "I wish we would develop it," said Yerli. "I don't want to spend our own money on the project in a retail business... [but] I love the picture of a TimeSplitters running on GFACE," the company's upcoming online service.

Easily my favorite console FPS of all time (sorry Halo). I've been wanting a new release in the series for ages now. Please make this happen Crytek!

Please let them bring back timesplitters! That's my favorite fps series. I keep bringing this topic up with my friend because I don't think timesplitters would do good nowadays! However I think it would be a good downloadable game. I kind of like this free to play idea but I assume this would mean no campaign and no map editor!

If Crysis 2 is any indication, I'm so not buying this game until it's on Steam.

They bought Free Radical, so they could fuck up other peoples franchises as well as their own.

They own the IP because they bought Free Radical (Aka Crytek UK).

It was very different, this biggest issue I have with it is how much they slowed the game down from TS1&2. The whole point is cartoon level chaos in an FPS and that's minimized by slowing it all down. Also, I want my 54,238 kill matches back :(

The ONLY reason to play Timesplitters was because they tried to model it off Goldeneye.

Perfect Dark was near perfection when it comes to customization and devs still have no idea how to copy it

Well why do todays shooters have so few guns? Where are the "fun" weapons like proxy mines? Why can't I choose which guns will be placed in the map? Why am I expected to aim while turning on a console, when it's very annoying?

Halo is the template for console shooters and thats why I don't play them

Yeah, I seriously miss the days of loads of ridiculous weapons. I remember when shooters had variety!

Timed, Proxy, and Remote mines need to make a fucking comback. Also the god damned laptop gun.

Huh..that actually sounds like a good idea. Timesplitter's characters were always kind of very stylized ala TF2, and I think selling hats/outfits/weapons fits that property pretty well.

Yup, hell you could have modern branding all over a purchasable character like a NASCAR driver/car and it wouldn't look out of place in the slightest.
