As THQ tries to get its house in order following a financial crisis, the publisher has announced that Volition's standalone expansion Saints Row: The Third - Enter the Dominatrix will be rolled into a "full-fledged" sequel due out in 2013. Bad news: no new Saints Row to play in September. Good news: full sequel next year, tentatively named 'The Next Great Sequel in the Saints Row Franchise.'

THQ's new president, Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin, said in today's announcement that he "was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise" when he saw it. The expandalone was to send the Third Street Saints into a Matrix-y virtual world.

"I asked the team what it could achieve given more time, more resources, and a broader scope for the project. We all agreed we wanted to play that game. When it comes to Saints Row, it's clear our fans want bigger, better, and even more over the top, and that's why Enter The Dominatrix will now be incorporated into a vastly expanded, full-fledged sequel, scheduled for calendar 2013."

He added, "We believe the potential for this sequel is far greater as a full-priced, full-length, high quality, connected experience."

As recently as May 15, Enter the Dominatrix was slated for release in September. Plans are changing quickly and boldly at THQ, which is possibly for the best. The publisher also recently revealed that Vigil's Warhammer 40,000 MMORPG Dark Millenium is no longer an MMO, but being reworked into "an immersive single player and online multiplayer experience."
