Blizzard limits creation of Diablo 3 games

While everyone was having fun testing out the new real-money auction house in Diablo III that launched late yesterday afternoon, Blizzard has added a limit to the number of games players can create within a certain time frame.

A post in the official forums offered vague details about the hotfix, which was added independently of the latest 1.0.2c patch to alleviate some strain on the game's servers. The fix apparently wasn't working as intended, and the Diablo 3 servers are currently down for more maintenance, but players can expect the limit to appear again once the issue is fixed.

Community Manager Lylirra addressed player concerns over the lack of an announced limit, saying the number "isn't yet set in stone" and that the team is trying to make sure normal play is not penalized.

Blizzard continues to monitor the server issues as well as the game experience. In preparation for the launch of the real-money auction house, it suspended or banned thousands of player accounts found to be hacking or botting, and has insisted players use an authenticator for the new AH.

Its still like 12 games Per 20 mins only limits super aggressive goblin farms.

What's special about farming goblins? They don't seem to drop an unusual amount of gold or gear, but I'm only up through Act2 NM.

This was broken, Blizzard already reversed this decision and removed it for now.

Happened to me last night trying to collect Leoric's Shinbone. The game basically forces you to log in and out 10-12 fast just to get the drop.

When I was farming for whimsy staff ingredients I was creating games pretty fast, but 12 in 20 is insane.

instead of creating new games there should just be an easy way to instance specific areas

They want to limit this - to stop people from farming stupid things like a single goblin spawn. I agree with them, it's stupid. They've been super clear about their design goals, and they are noble goals. They want the most efficient way of obtaining gear/gold to be to get 5 NV and continue killing rares/bosses (IE full act clears).

The only problem I have with limiting game creation is that out of game, you can't compare item values to actual stats. In addition, when you buy items you create games to test them out, and might drop in and out of game a bunch. I also swap between characters a bunch in between AH browsing. But seemingly I should never hit that limit, if it's 12 games in 20 minutes. Maybe if you don't leave town, it shouldn't count towards the limit? This would allow people to check out their gear / bank / etc without hitting the limit.

            The problem is, they're wrong.

They do clearly want the most efficient farming method to be 5 stacks and bosses. But it clearly isn't. And more than that, they're pulling a Sheldon. "But they're having fun wrong!"

Let people enjoy the game the way they want to, for fuck sake. Take a page from Bethesda's book.

No, they aren't wrong. Variety is more fun for almost everyone on the planet. If you like farming the same area for a specific spawn thousands of times and want it to be more rewarding than the more-varied "farming" approach, I want Blizzard to ignore you. I want your method to be less effective so I have no incentive to ever take the more boring approach.

Not only that, but real money's on the line now...and Blizzard owns the game, we only rent it out...they can absolutely do whatever they want.

They might be wrong, but that's why they're fixing it. They want 5NV/Bosses to be the fun way, and they are clearly tuning it to be as such. The 1.03 changes are going to make inferno much more efficient that way - since rares will drop guaranteed from elites.

right, it seems to me they want full act clears of 3 and 4 to be the endgame. go through act 3 with 5NV, hooray. when you transfer acts the buff dies :( then start up and go through act 4.

Full act clears aren't going to happen because :

FUCK the beginning of Act 1.
FUCK the end of Act 2.
FUCK the middle of Act 3.
FUCK.. well, nevermind, because Act 4 is pretty quick and not too bad.

The fun of meganerds that enjoy rushing things like treasure goblins and gold urns comes at the expense of the fun of regular players who play Diablo to kill shit, and expect real gameplay from Inferno. Whichever farming tactic is most efficient is the one that will set the standard of item prices in the economy, so the existence of this stuff penalizes players who don't participate in it. These cheese farm tactics are lame even by D2's standards, and Blizzard has been trying to make D3 better than that from the start.

When they forced everytbody that wanted to play to login so that Blizzard can create the zones, they took a responsibility to do that. You're playing it wrong is a lame excuse for them not being able to fulfill their obligations.

You ran into someone that actually communicated? All my pub games have been with mute weirdos who seem to have amazing gear and no fucking clue how to play. Shit like, 'hey this Champ pack is tough, I'ma kite dem! I'ma kite dem RIGHT INTO A ZONE WE HAVEN'T CLEARED YET". Fuck backtracking to a safe area. Oh look, now we have TWO champion packs at once!

Or they seem to just consider death every 2 and a half minutes, in not even Inferno difficulty, an enjoyable way to play the game. Gah.

Although I guess it's 50/50, some times the silent weirdos are decent players - ran Act III Nightmare on my WD, with a DH - we totally had a bit of an unspoken system that worked really well. Only player I ran into that seemed to like to clear the whole levels, like I do, as well.

Want to "eliminate strain on servers?" Make it so people who just want to play a single player game don't have to log in.

I know, train's left the station, but still - I'd really be curious to see how many single player sessions they see, number and percentage wise.
