Metal Gear Online servers come to a close

Metal Gear Online has officially shut down its servers, putting an end to a four year run of the game.

Konami has officially shut down Metal Gear Online, after a surprisingly long four-year run. The game's online service ended just a few hours ago, slightly ahead of the proposed June 21 date that was previously announced.

"The service was originally intended to have a life span of 3 years," read a statement from Konami. "However, out of respect for our loyal fans, we have continually pushed back this deadline in order to support our online community. Nevertheless, we have regretfully come to a point where players have experienced all that this iteration of Metal Gear Online is able to offer."

Konami chose to end it a little more than a week before it had previously claimed. But that seems fair enough to make the end-date exactly four years after the game's launch with Metal Gear Solid 4. "All of the staff involved would like to offer our deepest thanks for the support we've gotten since launch," Konami said. "Thank you for coming with us on this journey. Your help allowed MGO to grow and mature. We regret that this journey must end, but we sincerely hope that we will have the opportunity to serve you again in the future."

Does this effectively nullify any use for the purchased product? Is it possible to somehow play this game without servers? Excuse my ignorance, but I'm just curious if playing the game with others is now relegated to some sort of LAN or system-link set-up.

It has been a long time since I have played but if I remember correctly, you have to log in to your MGO account before you can do anything. Unfortunately, I don't remember there being a LAN option for the game.

There is, sadly, no LAN ability for this game. Not even the PS2 Metal Gear Online had this basic functionality. If LAN is only offered for any console game it can effectively be online forever.

This doesnt really make sense to me. I mean, the game has a feature that allows people to host dedicated games on their PS3. Why does this need to be removed? I could see if sony didnt want to use their servers or other equipment to keep the game going.....but why not allow people to continue to host dedicated games with their own PS3?
      Seems weird.......

Obviously whatever part of it they shut down was not without overhead on their part, or there wouldn't have been anything to shut down.

that would be why i said it doesnt make sense. If players are hosting games on their PS3s, the only real overhead i could imagine is saving stats for MGO accounts.....but honestly how much could that really be?

No functionality for direct user-to-user or LAN play was ever created or offered for this game. The overhead that this closure brings is the freeing of the MGO matching server, and presumably, the content that was on demand.
