SmartGlass to be supported in all Microsoft first-party titles

SmartGlass will be incorporated into all Microsoft first-party games going forward after the functionality is launched, according to Microsoft Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer.

In a press briefing short on surprises, Microsoft's SmartGlass stood out. While the demos on stage were concept prototypes, we can expect the functionality to be incorporated among all Microsoft first-party games going forward.

The cross-platform function is planned to work with any mobile device, from phones to tablets, giving extra info while playing a game or providing something to do while you're away from the living room. Microsoft Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer told Joystiq that the functionality will appear in all games from the company after the feature is launched.

Though Spencer didn't outline specific plans, the Halo Waypoint function we saw displayed at the press conference was used as an example to provide multiplayer GPS tracking. Spencer also mentioned "Ascend," a separate Halo experience played away from the TV that will feed info back into the game.

While we've seen some similar functions with mobile apps devoted to games like Mass Effect 3, SmartGlass is its own application that houses all of the functions itself. "So you have this surface, this smart surface, that sits on any device that you already own that's always in sync with what's happening on the television, and it knows where to go and grab the right content to display at the right time, to make sure that if you're playing Halo, then the Halo surface is available on SmartGlass," said Spencer.

Halo 4 is planned for release this fall, and it seems likely that it will be one of the first major uses of SmartGlass in a game.

How do you expect to play games via this ?

      Useless

It's a media, entertainment device, has nothing to do with gaming, oh microsoft certainly didn't hit the spot this year as you say, the've didn't just scored low with the plans, they've didn't hit the score chart at all, you expect to play FPS games with touch ? This is ridicolous as a gaming device it's a casual thing, it will do nothing that benefits gaming.

you can't compare it anymore, it's not the same industry area.

Microsoft console division is and was a parasite, they've just cashed in on the industry, they have no idea about gaming, so they're moving something they think it's gaming industry ... come on, this company is a joke.

Really? Did you even read what the tech will be used for? You are not going to be controlling Halo with your touch device. However, your touch device will be giving you more information about things you unlocked in Halo Waypoint as you progress in Halo 4. That's all this tech is going to be used for. It's not taking the place of the controller. A few games had you using the screen for elements, like the Madden presentation, but that's not going to be the standard control interface.

Ofcourse it won't be standard, but the addition of it is well .... it will be left to the industry to figure out.

You realize this guy makes his living by making outlandish claims that generate traffic right?

I'm not saying someone won't use SmartGlass as a controller, but it's not going to be the PRIMARY controller. We are seeing games add Kinect support for voice, but that's not the only way to play the game.

It may be true someday, but it is unofficially now too ... i've remember a lot of history and try to keep facts straight when communities go out of touch with what really happened. Without people like this, you know the mainstream would be totally confused, they can't even search google to find WiiU is not only a controller , let alone, research a topic heading back 10 years and get it right.

Im still in college and im not that far either. Im thinking what im going to do, currently it's just student-work, no idea if USA has that but in my country you only need to be legally registered in school and you can get student-status with which you can do all kinds of things and terms are super-low compared to actual emloyment ... it's kind of cheating so that's why there was laws limiting how much work students can do in a year cause it was said that they steal employment space from the actual emplyment seekers.

I've tought about making a website, a kind of a garage-invention that could grow into something big, then i thought about repairing PCs, then I thought about web develpoment, ... one of things that i thought was actually this kind of blog, posting rants and analysis on what doesn't make sense on the interent in the gaming industry (all sorts of things of wrong perception and industry inability to identify consumers ... and other issues such as piracy)

An analyst doesn't go out of the water ... but that's not an easy job either.

I understand the controller differentiations, but microsoft is a company that really knows how to catch every stupid consumer it can.

Its' an opportunity for the creative minds of developers to expand the possibilities of their games. I understand that some people lack the imagination to explore the possibilities and others are too close minded to even want to see or try anything new.

When the Nintendo DS first came out there were cries that touch was useless and that it was a gimich. And any early game that didn't prove that you 100% needed touch was PROOF that it was useless. Fortunately, most of us have evolved beyond that and we've come to accept that touch screens have a place in games.

I know there are a lot of people that hate Nintendo. Enough to hate anything that might remotely affirm that they're on to something and that a second touch pad can be cool and wonderfull things can be done with it. I'm sure there will be hichups, but eventually, most of use will evolve beyond out petty preconceptions and learn to enjoy it for what it is. Not what we thing it could be, or not what we never expected it to do, but for what it is. The people at Microsoft apparently thought it was important enough of an innovation to not ignore it and let it evolve without them. Maybe they're on to something. Maybe.

My guess would be that it depends on what kind of sales they are getting or expect and how many users with devices that can drive sales. If nobody uses it, then its hard to justify.

This'll be like the Kinect: not anything the actual 360 audience wants and nothing good will be implemented for it, but it's a bullet point for the 'better than the kiddie console' console warriors.
