Just as this latest TR game is trying to show that Lara did not magically wake up one day and become a badass, the gaming industry is not going to magically become a bastion of feminist and humanist ideology overnight. There is an ingrained culture that needs to evolve, and that evolution will happen gradually, step by step.
Crystal Dynamics is TRYING to take a step. They are trying to move Lara beyond the 'fighting fuck-toy' model, and create a real, human woman. One that is attractive and strong, but also capable of weakness and fear along with bravery, smarts and skill. They are trying to show a person, one that grows through experience and exists outside simply offering T&A.
Maybe they're not doing it perfectly. But they're fucking trying. And what do they get for their efforts? Not only are they risking being completely ignored by the less intelligent gamers who have no (supposedly) interest in a female character, they're getting it from the otherside too! The people they're trying to appeal to, and stand alongside.
Oh, Lara's too weak.
Oh, Lara is a victimm.
Oh, Lara is a toy for male gamers.
Oh, they're using rape for titlation.
Shut. The fuck. Up.
Seriously, why THE HELL, would any developer ever even ATTEMPT to take a step forward, when the only response they get is shit from both sides? If I were on Crystal Dynamics and I were witnessing this pathetic response, I would personally scratch every future project based around this Lara and say 'fuck it, we can't win, let's just make her a tit-stick with some smarmy quips again, at least we didn't catch hell for that.'

In relation to the whole representation of women in games, the world in general has a problem with how to view women. Are women beings of sexual power and influence? Or are they figures of wisdom and integrity? Should they use their bodies and their sexuality to express themselves? Or should we disregard a woman's looks?
The problem is we might never figure out the answer. For every female role model who is adored for her talent and intellect there's a Lady Gaga or a Fergie being adored for their sexual power. For every woman wowing people with her art there's a woman wowing people with her curves.
The real victim becomes the average woman caught in the middle of a world that demands she be both visually beautiful and strong in character. But she must balance the two else she become labelled a slut or are plain and manly.
I'm so happy being a guy, it's so much easier, the things this world expects me to be are clear and achievable.
