If you can't work these things into the basic controls of the game leave them out. The guy during the SmartGlass presentation was pretty funny too, if you can't follow Game of Thrones maybe it is because you are being distracted by your other devices and not paying enough attention.

Think about when you have to pause a game like Skyrim to access your map spell book. Wouldn't it be more immersive to glance down at your tablet like a map or book then it is to halt gameplay to do so?
I think it'd be much more efficient to browse a merchants good list by tapping and scrolling on my iPad then it is to thumb through it one item at a time with a control stick. All the while the merchant is on the main screen, without a menu stamped over their face, talking to you about what they're selling.
When you pick up a data pad on Halo Reach or you read the lengthy diary entries in The Witcher ... Is it easier to read text on a tablet in your hand or text on a TV 7 feet away? My eyes would appreciate reading large amounts of texts on a tablet.
I could go on and on. The opportunities to enhance a gamfoil the departments of function and immersion are endless.
