Nintendo's Miiverse messages to be moderated

Nintendo will be moderating Miiverse messages before they go up, resulting in a delay to its social networking tool.

Nintendo's Miiverse seems pretty progressive, by Nintendo standards. You'll be able to see other friends' statuses, leave messages or tips, and take screenshots. But if you were expecting unfettered access to leave any message you want, no such luck. This is Nintendo we're talking about.

The last thing the company wants is a special episode of Dateline devoted to this new predator's tool, so it will be checking the messages to protect children. The company is hiring special "human resources" employees to moderate messages before they go up. This will delay the messages, and Nintendo is hoping to keep that delay to around a half-hour.

"The attraction of a social network is the immediacy of the feedback," president Satoru Iwata told the LA Times. "But personally, I think 30 minutes should be acceptable."

The Miiverse will also use automated content filtering for dirty words, and a user-end system that lets you flag inappropriate content. Between the first two methods, though, it seems unlikely you'll ever really need to flag a message. Nintendo is intent on keeping Miiverse squeaky clean.

As long as there aren't any friend codes, this may be something I can look past. Please don't tell me there's friend codes.

There's one level of creepiness when you know your messages are stored and there's a chance employees are reading them. It's a whole other creepy when you know for a fact someone is just browsing through everything you say and keeping tabs on your behavior proactively. I don't know if I like this.

I'm not sure how "proactive" it will be, that would be an awful lot of HR for something like that, probably filtering posts and anything more than text or containing certain flag words will get checked.

Why can't they just have parental controls AVAILABLE for it so those of us that don't have kids playing with the Wii can just use it normally!?

This is only for the public plaza stuff so you can't display a giant picture of a dick to strangers or a pictogram saying "FUCK JEWS" with a picture of a swastika, and that's fair enough. They're not moderating your personal messages unless you report them.
