Vita PSOne Classics coming in waves

Sony confirmed today that PSOne Classics will be rolled out gradually onto the Vita, rather than becoming available all at once.

Sony announced at its E3 press briefing that PSOne Classics are finally coming to the Vita. Frankly the hold-up has been a little odd in the first place, so it seemed natural to assume that they'd come all at once. Sony would clear the blockage in a basement pipe somewhere, and the full selection currently on PS3 and PSP would just show up, right? Nope.

Joystiq reports that the PSOne classics will be rolled out gradually, starting this summer. Once a game becomes available, you'll be able to download it for free if you've already purchased it before. On the other hand, that also means you'll probably have to wait for some of the games you've already bought to become available on your shiny new device.

When Sony announced the move, it showed Final Fantasy VII, Tomb Raider, Wild Arms, Twisted Metal 2, Arc the Lad, Cool Boarders 2, and Jet Moto. It's probably a safe bet those will be among the first crop to roll out.

How many people actually care about PSone games now? I mean, old nintendo games on the eshop is one thing.. the games are 2D, 8 bit and there's no expectation for them to look and play like a modern game. But PSone games were at the early stages of 3D gaming on consoles, and their looks and gameplay is dated. Sure they were great at the time, but they haven't aged well.

Yeah, the games sound awesome, but it's all pure nostalgia, nothing more. I played the crap out of Coolboarders 2 back in the day but I'm fairly certain it would suck balls now. I'd play it for 10 minutes, enjoy the soundtrack, and be done with it.

some games I'll play the fuck out of... RPGs in particular. Great for Vita!! I'll probably re-buy xenogears and the final fantasy 7 + 9, maybe a few others.

I'm still interested in the classic jRPG's but many of the action games are too clunky to play.

That said, I hope they can figure out the contractual issues with the Mega Man Legends voice actors since capcom hosed us on a sequel.

Xenogears and FFVII on my Vita would serve as great ways to pass time until P4: The Golden comes out. It's been years since I've replayed either one.

Considering the playability of ANY PS One Classic game on the PSP, RIGHT NOW, this seems absurd. I'm guessing it's nothing more than a strategy to not let the Vita go too long without something new to play, even if it's decade-old games. Also, hopefully you'll be able to use the PS3 transfer work-around to play PSP games "not yet available" on Vita with PS One Classics.

May just have to pick up a vita, I loved those games. Besides I'm still waiting for a good Vita exclusive worth the $50. I'm sold!
