Sony rejects idea of Vita price cut

Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida says it's too early to drop the Vita's price, as the company is still focused on building a library. He also says they made a misstep by not showing off more Vita games at the press briefing.

After a rocky start, Nintendo slashed the 3DS price, and sales have since picked up. Seeing the Vita share similar struggles, some analysts recently called for Sony to follow suit.

The company disagrees. Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida says it is "absolutely" too early for a price cut.

"From the value for money standpoint, we think we have a good price for what the system is," Yoshida told Eurogamer. "And our priority is to achieve the potential through more games and services." He says the company has to find ways to reduce the costs of the memory card, since it's a necessary expense with the system. Right now, though, the company's "laser focus is to increase the content and to realize the potential of the system."

Yoshida assures that more content was coming, even if the Sony press briefing was light on featuring those games. He suggests Sony was trying to make a shorter conference this year. "I'm getting lots of tweets from people saying, 'Where are PS Vita games?' That was, in retrospect, our fault - not looking at every angle when we designed the program for the show. We have 25 new games, Vita titles, playable on the show floor. We could have spent more time - probably we should - showing off those games coming out this year."

"Sony rejects idea of Vita price cut", in other news, Sony rejects the idea of Vita ever making any sort of impact whatsoever on the gaming market (1,6 million units sold worldwide since launch).

Why would they not realise that hardly showing any games at the press briefing would be a bad idea?

doesn't really need a price cut, what it needs is a bundle with a game that will sell the system and with bundled storage. it looks like we'll see that in time for xmas with the AC3 +4GB memory card bundle. if they price that too high over the base model, it's not going to be good.

They also rejected the idea of supporting it from what their conference showed.

it's funny, I was waiting to see how Sony was going to support the Vita before buying one, but stuff like what they did for E3 has made me second guess things. That and refusing to cut the price down makes me think they aren't that commited to the thing.

I've been balancing right on the edge of buying one of these things. It's a very nice piece of hardware and I want one. I was waiting for them to blow me away at E3 with some games and a possible price cut. I want to buy this thing, but they didn't sell me on it at all. Now I'm wondering if they plan on phasing it out or something. They hardly mentioned it.

Its only been out for like 4 months? And people want a price cut? It really isn't overpriced for the hardware you get. And if you want to save some $$ and get the Wifi only model. The storage is the only thing I feel needs a price drop.

And as the article mentions, they have 25 new Vita games on the show floor. Its not getting phased out, they arent dropping support. You people are crazy. Sure it was a bad idea to not mention much other than PSOne classics in the presentation, but there is a lot headed to Vita this year.

there's no need for the 3g model. you can't download or play games off 3g anyway. the only thing it's good for is grabbing the updated high scores list assuming you already have a smartphone to surf the web and use facebook and netflix on.

I don't know how anyone at Sony didn't see that the Vita DOA. Seriously. It's overpriced, limited catalog of current and future games, horrendous support from Sony for updates and etc.

No wonder the company is in the red.

35-40 bucks for large full sized games isn't a bad deal. that price for some of the tech demos they're releasing are but i've seen those ones for 15 and under on PSN which is similarly priced to other games of those types for XBLA and PSN on the big consoles. if you don't like that i haven't had any regrets skipping over it. if you want a really good free game, motorstorm RC is the real deal thanks to scion's sponsorship.

what's up with horrendous support for updates? i've had a couple of firmware updates from sony so far as well as a few games nagging me for updates. what's the problem here?

they do need to entice more developers to make more games but we have some good stuff coming on the horizon. i'm really looking forward to black ops and AC3.

If Yoshida said they need to focus on ways to get the price of the memory cards down then it sounds to me like they're about to take a step in the right direction. It's just flash memory with a proprietary shape and pinout, and the prices they charge for it are insane.

Quite frankly I don't see them not wanting to drop the price of the system as a big deal because I don't see the price as being too high. I think $249 for a PS3 I can take with me is completely reasonable. Until I found out the price of their memory cards I wanted to buy one at launch.

It's this simple for me; until the price of high capacity PSV memory cards is more in line with the prices you'd see for other flash memory of similar size, my Vita will continue to sit on a store shelf.
