XCOM: Enemy Unknown E3 trailer looks nothing like XCOM: Enemy Unknown

How exactly can one sell a turn-based tactical game to the E3 audience, who clap and roar because they recognise a character in a video game? The approach taken by XCOM: Enemy Unknown is pretending you're something else entirely with a very flashy E3 trailer.

How exactly can one sell a turn-based tactical game to the E3 audience, those hooting, hollering troglodytes who clap and roar because they recognise a character in a video game? The approach taken by XCOM: Enemy Unknown, at least, is to pretend you're something else entirely with a very flashy E3 trailer.

Yes, though our Andrew's preview saw that it's true to the careful, cerebral original X-COM games, the E3 trailer looks more like any given testosterone-fueled shooter. Silly 2K Games!

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is due on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this October, made by Civilization dev Firaxis. It really is a proper video game, not that you'd guess from this:

Alice O'Connor posted a new article, XCOM: Enemy Unknown E3 trailer looks nothing like XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

If any of that is in-engine, then I'm quite impressed with the visual style. It at least looks awesome! Hopefully the classic turn-based gameplay is there underneath.

And the irony is how it looks just like an action/FPS game, but it really is a turn based game. Simply cannot wait, definitely going to be #1 strategy game of 2012 for me, screw SC2! :P

When will the x-com series get a proper multiplayer mode, with full co-op missions or head-to-head humans vs. aleins?!

There was a fan remake that added full multiplayer(not just battlescape), and yes, aliens won almost every game.

Sadly the devs got scared that they would get a C&D/sued when XCOM(the shitty FPS) was announced and decided to stop before they finished. I think it was pretty much just X-COM AI for alien single player and the ufopedia that they needed to finish.

I for one would rather see emotional soldiers wallowing in sadness and sad music playing while a tear drops off their cheek in slow motion. Highlited by muzzle flash.

According to 2K's website, October 9th is the release date. And there's BONUSES:

The Elite Soldier Pack looks like early access DLC free with a preorder. Plus it includes the original X-COM blond flattop as a soldier model I guess. And there's a special edition with a bunch of neat sounding stuff, PC only...but..I buy my games on Steam. Sad emoticon.

Reminds me of the intro animation of the Original Xcom.

And I'm looking forward to the animated base looking less like a spreadsheet.

FMVs instead of/with Text narratives to move the story along is fine with me!
