Battlefield 3 Premium launches today at $50

As suspected, Battlefield 3's optional Premium service has launched today at the price of $49.99. Your 50 bones get you early access to all five DLC expansions, which'd otherwise cost $15 each, along with other perks.

Today also brings the first of those, Close Quarters, though initially only to PlayStation 3.

The five expansions pack 20 maps, 20 weapons, 10 vehicles, and four modes in all, plus Premium includes priority access to servers, and other bits and pieces too. Check out last week's story for more on what you get.

Close Quarters is will hit Pc and Xbox 360 for Premium members on June 19. For non-Premium members, it's hitting PS3 on June 12 then elsewhere June 26. Confusing? Two tiers of exclusivity will do that for you.

10 times, but you get to choose when you pay during the course of your entire lifetime. Also, 15 cents per knife thrust.

So, you are preordering 5 expansion packs that are planned on paper but don't actually exist yet. Using a credit card which digitally represents your purchasing power instead of physical cash. And for all of this, you get guns and walls that don't actually exist.

      Fuckin' ethereal.

Given Battlefield 3's state on the 360 this sounds like an incredible waste of money. Unless that $50 somehow covers and rolls over to Bad Company 3...

These aren't expansions. These are map packs. And SMALL map packs. (big individual maps, though)
I remember map packs with 10-12 quality maps for $10. Wasn't there an official Quake (or Doom?) pack that sold the better user maps?

I don't imagine BF3 maps are too easy to produce, balance, and QA since they are so large. Quality over quantity is probably their goal. On the flip side $15 is a bit steep for 4 maps, but I'd say the amount of time people will put into those maps should justify the price for people who are still actively playing. Plus, people are just eager for new content at this point.

The packs might not for you and I'll judge whether or not I want them when reviews and additional trailers come out.

The full retail price of the game for some map packs :\ Also yay let's fragment the player base 5 times. Nothing new I know, but this trend of not supporting the game and releasing pay for map packs instead irritates me.

Considering their DLC launch schedule when I first purchased this game, there's no way in fucking hell I'd trust these guys to release me 5 pieces of DLC, be it in a year or goddamn 2 years - hell maybe even 3 years.

Unless t's some incredibly shitty DLC.
They dropped and ignored the game from my perspective and I have absoloutely no interest in rewarding them for being such assholes.

Activision takes a good amount of crap for churning the CoD franchise (rightfully so) but at least they've been supporting their player base. Two months after BF3 came out (at least on consoles) the attitude from EA seemed to be, Welp, this isn't Call of Duty so screw it.

For those ardent fans on BF3 I see this as a plus:

      Consider the following math:
      5 DLCs at $15 each is : $75
New Kits, camo, guns, and vehicles lets just say all total : $15

At the least its $100 worth of content for $50.

From a purely quantitative analysis, this looks like a good deal for any ardent fan of BF3.

However, if you are not a die-hard fan, if you are tired of shooters, then this my post as well as this announcement doesn't apply to you. It is hardly the rip-off people are making it out to be. Of course, that is with the caveat that a few people have noted: they do not trust DICE to bring out all of the expansion packs. And of course, there are also other arguments against the Premium Service for BF3. But really, is it all that different from spending $60 on BF3?

In fact, I would argue that after all content is said and delivered, it will be equal to if not greater than the amount of content in BF3.
