Penny Arcade episode 3 skids out in July

Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World's latest throwback RPG, the webcomic-inspired Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3, has been confirmed for a July 10 release on XBLIG, and PC and Mac via Steam, priced at $5.

After impressing the world with its throwback RPGs Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World, Zeboyd Games seemed the perfect team to take over Penny Arcade's 'episodic' retro RPG series. Soon we'll get to sink our teeth into the fruits of its labour, as the indie dev announced on Friday that Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 will be released for PC, Mac and Xbox Live Indie Games on July 10. The PC edition is coming via Steam as a SteamPlay title, so you'll get both the Windows and Mac flavours. It'll cost you $5 (400 Microsoft Points) on either platform. Android and iOS versions are also in the works, at Tinkerhouse Games, but there's no word yet on when they'll arrive. "We're very excited about this game – We think it is a huge improvement over Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death VII and can't wait for more people to have a chance to play it," Zeboyd said in the announcement. The Penny Arcade Adventures series was originally developed by Hothead Games, but the studio dropped it in favour of DeathSpank. Only two episodes of the planned trilogy were released, back in 2008, but Zeboyd picked up the ball in 2011.

Ah crap, why are they releasing this on the Indie Games channel instead of Arcade. Some countries don't get the Indie Channel for some moronic reason (like mine, the Netherlands).

They probably don't have a publisher like they did with the first two games.

It's being developed by Zeboyd who created a few XBLIG games previously. I don't think they have access or funds for something as high profile as XBLA. The entry point for the Indie channel is literally less than a hundred dollars. The entry point for XBLA is tens of thousands and has a much, much more stringent approval process.

Releasing the game on XBLIG/Steam is relatively cheap and easy whereas XBLA is way more difficult (but potentially more lucrative as XBLIG games don't generally sell well unless they're Minecraft clones).

PA could probably afford to get it on XBLA though. And I have to assume it would be able to pay back that investment, unless the first two did really poorly.

Consider that the first two did poorly enough to initially cancel the third one.

I'm thinking maybe this is a licensing deal - Zeboyd is paying PA and so they get the characters and not the clout?
