Wii U Pro Controller revealed

The Wii U Pro Controller will look familiar to anyone that's held a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller.

With multiplatform games slated to hit Wii U, some gamers will opt not to use Nintendo's unique touch screen table controller. For those gamers, Nintendo is offering an alternate controller option. The Wii U Pro Controller will look familiar to anyone that's held a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller.

This peripheral does away with the touch screen and includes two analog sticks, shoulder buttons, and face buttons in a configuration that should make for easy translation for existing Xbox 360 and PS3 games. Given the Wii U GamePad now includes support for L3 and R3, it's likely the Wii U Pro Controller will also include that functionality. The only real question left is--will gamers be able to accommodate the odd swapped placement of the right analog stick and face buttons?

The right side is just an upside down gamecube controller right on. That controller beats any xbox or playstation controller out of the water.

Yeah, the gamecube button placement is way better. Don't think I'll enjoy having the second analog stick higher than the face buttons.

yeah but i guess i am asking whether you need to buy this new wiiU version, if you still have the older classic, when the Wii controllers work with the WiiU. If you have to buy a new WiiU classicPlus then I'll be pretty upset.

This seems to be more contoured to the hand, while the classic controller pro was more like a classic controller with handles. Also this looks like it will be completely wireless, i.e. not needing to plug into a wiimote.

I'm not sure I like the right analog stick location. I am used to the right analog always being located under the right face buttons and not above.

Personally I like how it looks like the Xbox 360 controller, which I like alot. Nintendo is responsible for a ton of the innovation is modern controllers anyways. Now I will have a ton of different Nintendo controllers in a pile on the coffee table.

that's fine, as for me, no more. I am through buying nintendo controllers that I'll never use or use very little. I have a set of four wii controllers that my friends and I have played maybe a few hours worth of games with, THREE YEARS AGO.

Looks pretty good. Not sure how shooters will play with the right stick like that. The buttons look like they are farther away than a 360 or PS3 controller.

Does this mean that the tablet is not going to be the primary input device?

The tablet is what'll ship with the system. Every game will utilize it, I'd imagine, since it's what everyone will own.

We'll see, the console already needs to render for a 1080p HDTV and the controller display. Three displays, two of which it needs to stream video to, might be a bit much.

They've confirmed already that only ONE tablet will work per WiiU.

But it's following a mainstream design though for regular games. Multiplat devs and some gamers were complaining anyways. Some gamers don't like waggle and some devs don't want to spend any time tailoring a game to specific controls or don't have the desire to fully utilize a console's unique featuers, AKA developer laziness.

Doesn't this shows that Nintendo likes to bring new ideas to the table and also listens to it's customers. (Or fanboys who like to bag on Nintendo but will not buy anything because it's not bro enough for them)

This is the sexiest, controller I've ever seen, and will easily be the greatest.

I'm glad their keeping the 1/2 gloss 1/2 matted finish going on, that's way more comfortable than an all matted controller.

This is correct, it's a tiny awkward thing with bolted on slippery convex sticks that almost touch if you move both inwards. I can use it, but it's nowhere near the best design.

Oh yeah, I can definitely use it; I loved it on the PS2, but after using the Xbox/360 controller it is so damned hard for me to use DualShock anymore. The side-by-side analog placement just annoys the hell out of me, as do the faux-triggers for L2 and R2. Microsoft may not have done everything right this generation, but I still say the 360 controller is the best damned console controller ever. Followed closely by the Dreamcast controller...screw the haters!

Well that pretty much wraps up all possible variations of stick placements..

      Ps3: bottom sticks
      360: diagonal sticks
      Wii U: top sticks

I 100%ed Super Meat Boy using analogue stick and I don't see how you could do it with a directional pad. I was constantly having to essentially PID control my stick flipping it back and forth a couple of times a second to regulate trajectories etc.

If you're referring to the 360 style DPad, have you never used a Nintendo controller before? MS' DPad feels like garbage in comparison.

Hmm, reaching down for your buttons will take some getting used to. Not sure if I'd like the analog sticks at the very top and sides, looks like it would pop right out of your hands or something.

Of course, all of the letters are reversed from the 360, X where Y is, and A where B is....goddamit. Not like I'm going to buy the system anyways, who am I kidding.
