ArmA 2 'Day Z' mod patch adds sickness

A patch for the ArmA 2 "Day Z" mod adds sickness, making your temperature drop and lose blood, while also coughing loudly to warn other players that you're infected.

The military shooter ArmA 2 has gotten a sizable sales boost from the Day Z mod, and mod-maker "Rocket" is continuing to add more sadistic tweaks for those seeking a tough challenge. The popular game mod has now updated to 1.5.8, adding a "sickness" feature to the game. Because zombies clearly weren't enough to worry about before.

According to the patch notes, you can now become sick in Day Z, which will cause you to slowly lose blood until you find and take some antibiotics. You can't die from the sickness, since it only reduces blood down to a minimum of 6,000, but it will certainly make your task more difficult. Sick players will lose temperature, so you'll need to build fires to stay warm which now requires adding wood to keep it lit. If your temperature drops too much, the camera will shake.

If you want to rely on the kindness of strangers, know that as a sick player, you'll cough loudly to signal others to stay away. Even the mod's creator seems to be curious about the social implications. "I don't really know what affect [sic] the new sickness and temperature system will have on player behavior especially with antibiotics so scarce," he wrote. "It is the genesis of an idea, so please remember this might cause havoc. You need to be careful."

The patch also makes a few other adjustments. You can't fill your canteen with sea water anymore, so you'll need to find freshwater ponds and wells. Plus disconnection saving means you won't have to save before quitting, and the inventory has added context-sensitive interactions. It also fixes thick fog, keeps you from falling to your death if climbing a ladder with a pistol, nerfs the Winchester, balances some loot, and packs a few other tweaks.

Can't stop playing, despite the annoying things. Mostly, I'm pissed because I'm stuck as a bandit for now with no way back until the bandit skin is patched out.

Has anyone discussed the ruleset for the shack server? Can we have cross-hairs, please?

Don't know but I hope we have a shack auto kick feature like in BF3 so we can make room for shackers. I hate that all these servers are always full. Playing either the waiting game on server queue or loading game. Then play the hiking game when in game =D Its like 4 games in one.

Kicking people to make room for shackers is against the rules for hosting a server.

BEWARE - The same restrictions apply to Non-Dev run servers!
            - IT MAY NEVER BE PASSWORDED
            - NO EXCESS KEYS OR MODS
            - NO KICKING TO MAKE ROOM FOR 'FRIENDS' OR CLANMATES
            - IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO UPDATE YOUR SERVER TO THE LATEST VERSION OF DAYZ
            - Their are only two reasons why you, as a server owner, should ban a player on your server. Those two reasons are: Malicious talk, and racism. You may not ban a user for stealing your loot, killing you, spying on you, etc.

The point of having a shack server is so that we have a place to put all of our crap down. We won't have to worry about everyone being on a different server with different gear. Everything will be on one server.

Rocket has said he is looking into reserved slots but for now everyone is one equal ground. I'm fine with this.

We won't be allowed to do that. http://www.dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=3593

If I may suggest a loophole. Being that we are all always on TS. If there is enough of us trying to get on, Trombles could announce a server reset and we could all jump on right after.

This seems like the only real possibility and it shouldn't really be a problem since periodic reboots seem needed for servers now anyway.

Indeed. I wanted to try out bandit gameplay without realizing that the player state is persistent across all servers (this was like when I first installed it). The problem is, there doesn't seem to be a way to reverse bandit status anymore and you can't just create a new profile because it's assigned to your player id. I'd like to stop killing random players but because I'm KoS right now...I'm kinda of stuck doing it.

Humanity probably still exists and works as before, they just removed it from the debug monitor.

Fun raid on Stary Sobor last night. Then my brother and I crept away, into the woods to log off, and fired a few shots and you all went ape on TS lol

Crabs did the same shit to us like 2 clicks away and was throwing flares and popping off shots randomly. What a dick.

Unlike the Far Cry 2 sickness mechanic, this sounds like it could be fun!

Could this potentially spin-off into a stand alone game? I buy it after some polish and more balanced fleshed out ideas.
