Jagged Alliance: Back in Action DLC mission released

By Alice O'Connor, May 16, 2012 6:45am PDT

The dreams of every hardcore Jagged Alliance fan have come true, with the launch of new Jagged Alliance: Back in Action downloadable content based upon the tie-in novel 'Shades of Red.' For people who merely enjoy the turn-based tactics game, hey, more JA!

The DLC adds one single new mission based upon I.M. Wong's book, which was included with the German Special Edition. In it, the excellently-named Ivan Dolvic, Kyle 'Shadow' Simmons and Cynthia 'Fox' Guzzman are off to stop a naughty terrorist from nuking the world's leaders. But wait, surprise twist! Fox is captured before the mission starts, so you'll have to free her first before stopping the bad men using your bullets. Ah, techno-thrillers!

For $4.99, Shades of Red will give you an estimated hour of extra playtime. It's available now from your friendly neighbourhood digital distributor.

It definitely looks hardcore. You start off outside, but the majority of the map is a huge enclosed complex with 7 or 8 strategic areas to cap inside of it. For reference, the biggest sectors in the full campaign usually have tops 3 or 4 strategic areas to take.

I loaded it up with fog of war on so I have no idea how many enemies are in the map, but my rough guess is 60-80 (but possibly more based on how big it is).

You have to rescue fox and assassinate an enemy commander. You start off with an absolute bare minimum of gear, however Ivan and Shadow are both pretty amazing. I'm guessing you find loot very quickly to rearm your guys.

I have to say, standalone missions could lead to some pretty awesome one-off scenarios. I can't even count how many times I played through the JA2 demo and I know I knocked out the BiA demo about 10 times despite its initial brutal difficulty. I only wish they'd release a new demo of a different sector with all the huge improvements that last few updates have brought to the game so people could check it out.
