Capcom 're-evaluating' on-disc DLC

The idea that we don't own games we buy, merely a license to use them, is a contentious one. On-disc 'downloadable content,' where the data for DLC is included on the disc but we must pay to unlock it, draws attention to this in an ugly way, and is rarely popular. Capcom's a frequent instigator here, but now the publisher's taking a look at on-disc DLC and "re-evaluating" its stance.

"We would like to assure you that we have been listening to your comments and as such have begun the process of re-evaluating how such additional game content is delivered in the future," senior VP Christian Svensson said on the Capcom forums.

Earlier this year, fans reported Capcom to the Better Business Bureau after discovering that Street Fighter X Tekken's $20 character packs were already on-disc but locked. Capcom responded that there was "no distinction" between on-disc 'DLC' and actual downloadable content, which may be legally correct but certainly riled players up further.

Svensson had previously asked SFxT players to report anyone who used a hacked Xbox 360 to play the on-disc DLC characters before their official release, so Microsoft could ban them.

While Capcom is having a good think about whether it wants to continue this practice, several future games, including next week's release Dragon's Dogma, will still feature on-disc DLC as the decisions were made long ago.

"As this process has only just commenced in the past month or so, there will be some titles, where development began some time ago and that are scheduled for release in the coming months, for which we are unable to make changes to the way some of their post release content is delivered."
